Ray J’s counterclaim concerns a different subject: the tape and the 2023 settlement. Keeping the two strands separate matters: one involves the statements that prompted the defamation suit; the other involves Ray J’s claims about the tape and the settlement.

The agreement published by TMZ says that “neither an arbitrator nor any court has ruled on the merits of the Claims and Counterclaims.” It also says the settlement is not an admission of liability by any party. The document establishes that the parties settled without a merits ruling; it does not prove either side’s account of the tape’s release.

TMZ attributed a $6 million payment to Ray J’s account of the settlement and reported that the family had not confirmed it. The figure should therefore be understood as a reported, attributed claim—not as an uncontested term established by the cited coverage.
