A Raspberry Pi sending a live stream to YouTube uses about monthly GB ≈ outgoing bitrate in Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45, before overhead. At a steady 4 Mbps for 24 hours a day across a 30-day month, that is about 1,296 decimal GB, or 1.3 TB. Your actual total depends on the bitrate, how long you stream, and your broadband plan. This estimates uploading a live stream from the Pi—not watching YouTube on it.
Estimate monthly upload data from bitrate and streaming time
The calculation is payload arithmetic, not a measurement from a particular Raspberry Pi or internet provider. It uses decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes:
Monthly GB ≈ total outgoing bitrate in Mbps × hours streamed × 0.45
For example, 4 Mbps × 720 hours in a 30-day month × 0.45 gives approximately 1,296 GB. Use the stream’s total outgoing bitrate and the hours it is actually live. If you stream only part of each day, multiply by those hours rather than assuming 24/7.

Examples for a 30-day month
The following estimates assume the bitrate stays constant and exclude overhead:
| Outgoing bitrate | Streaming schedule | Estimated monthly upload |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 24 hours/day | 972 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 24 hours/day | 1,296 GB |
| 5 Mbps | 24 hours/day | 1,620 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 24 hours/day | 2,592 GB |
| 14 Mbps | 24 hours/day | 4,536 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 6 hours/day | 324 GB |
At 1 Mbps continuously for 30 days, the same arithmetic gives about 324 GB. A provider may report a different figure: retries, protocol traffic, other services using the Pi, and the provider’s usage accounting can affect totals. The available sources establish no universal overhead percentage, so do not add a blanket adjustment.

Choose the bitrate configured on the Pi
The Raspberry Pi camera documentation describes network streaming and encoder configuration. It treats bitrate as the target H.264 encoder setting that affects output size and includes a 10,000,000-bit/s example. That supports using the configured outgoing bitrate in the estimate; it does not establish a fixed monthly allowance for a Pi or guarantee a particular setup’s stability. The documentation also gives Pi 5-specific streaming pipeline guidance: Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.
If you do not know the bitrate, inspect the encoder or streaming software settings you use. Include audio and any other outgoing stream data if your configuration reports them separately; the estimate should represent the total sustained outbound rate sent to YouTube.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives these recommended rates for H.264. They are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that every stream must use the same setting:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended encoder bitrate | Approximate upload at 24/7 for 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 3 Mbps | 972 GB |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 2,592 GB |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 1,620 GB |
| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps | 4,536 GB |
Monthly totals in this table are derived estimates in decimal GB, assuming the recommended rate is sustained for 720 hours and excluding overhead. YouTube’s encoder page also lists minimum settings; the appropriate choice depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and what your connection can sustain. It recommends CBR, RTMP/RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, and advises choosing a quality reliable for your connection and testing before an event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check your Indian broadband plan’s FUP and upload speed
There is no single India-wide broadband data allowance or upload-speed figure to apply to this estimate. TRAI says providers must clearly specify the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limit on an “unlimited” plan and the speed after that limit is exhausted. It also says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload or download speed; providers must indicate typical speeds in tariff offerings. Check your own provider’s tariff for the FUP, post-limit speed, typical upload speed, and any additional-use charges. These points are in TRAI’s BroadBand FAQ, last updated 1 October 2026.
- Compare the estimated monthly upload with the plan’s stated FUP, not just the word “unlimited.”
- Check whether the listed typical upload speed can sustain your chosen bitrate reliably; upload speed is not the same thing as a monthly data allowance.
- Find out whether exceeding the FUP reduces speed or incurs additional charges, and what the reduced speed is.
- Allow for other devices and services on the same broadband account when considering total usage.
If you mean watching YouTube on the Pi
Watching a video is a download-use question, not the outgoing-stream calculation above. Playback usage depends on resolution and viewing time; the encoder bitrate for a live stream is not a playback measurement. YouTube lists recommended sustained speeds of 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. Those are playback-speed recommendations, not monthly data totals. See YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices.

Keep the monthly estimate useful
Use a likely bitrate and schedule first, then compare the resulting estimate with your plan’s actual terms. A 4 Mbps stream running nonstop is about 1.3 TB of decimal upload in a 30-day month before overhead; changing either bitrate or hours changes the estimate proportionally. For scheduled streams, calculate each schedule separately and add the results.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings without leaving a Pi or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera and streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing at home has to stay on to keep the stream going.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, as made, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details, then start the free day.
