Rasika Dugal has called Beena Tripathi one of her most challenging roles because Beena’s confidence, physical presence and comfort with her sexuality were unlike her own. In a Scroll.in interview published on 17 November 2020, Dugal described how she prepared for that difference, made small performance choices her own, and nearly turned the part down over a difficult first-season scene.
Why Beena was a challenge for Dugal
Dugal described Beena as the opposite of herself. Speaking to The Indian Express on 22 December 2019, she said, “The most challenging was Beena Tripathi of Mirzapur because I think she is the opposite of me.”

In the later Scroll.in interview, she explained the contrast in terms of physicality and sexuality: “Beena is somebody who wears her sexuality on her sleeve, she has a body language that is very different from mine, she has this magnetic pull, a comfortable confidence about her – these are not things I have in life.” It was a question of building a character whose presence did not come naturally to her, rather than simply reproducing her own mannerisms.
How did Rasika Dugal prepare to play Beena Tripathi?
Dugal said she worked on Beena’s physicality by watching videos of a person whose physical presence she found useful as a reference. The Scroll.in interview does not name that person, so the reference should not be attributed to a specific public figure.

Her account points to observation as one tool for creating a character whose body language differed from her own. She also brought small personal choices into the performance. “I will always try out one thing that I have brought myself, it makes me own the space,” she told Scroll.in.
Gestures and rings as performance details
Dugal cited hand gestures and rings she wanted to look spiritual among the details she contributed. These choices were a way to make Beena’s world feel inhabitable to her as an actor; they were not presented as a complete explanation of the character or a prescribed method for playing her.

How Dugal came to the role—and what almost made her refuse
Dugal told Scroll.in that she contacted director Karan Anshuman after hearing he was working on a project with Excel Entertainment. The role sounded interesting to her and unlike the parts she usually received.
One difficult scene in the first season nearly led her to refuse the role. She said the scene was changed to a silhouette, with the actors avoiding eye contact. That adjustment shaped how the moment was presented without requiring a more explicit depiction.

What Dugal looks for when choosing a script
In her 2019 Indian Express interview, Dugal described script selection as a set of priorities that can change over time. She said, “There are a bunch of things. The priority of that list keeps changing. But more or less the five important things that I consider are — is it a compelling story? Is it being told sensitively? Is my role in the story exciting to me as an actor? Will it give me something new to do? And of course, the kind of people and team that I am working with is very important.”
That account helps explain the appeal of Beena: Dugal said the part offered her something unfamiliar, even as its physicality and confidence presented a challenge. It also reflects her emphasis on the story’s treatment and the people making it, not just the size of a role.

How Beena’s story connects to the 2026 Mirzapur film
Dugal later returned to the character in the film. In a June 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, she said, “I’ve totally enjoyed being Beena over the multiple editions of Mirzapur.” In an About Amazon India cast conversation in 2026, she said the film gave Beena’s story a context she had not known before: “And for Beena, I felt that within the film’s story, the character’s story has been given a context that I perhaps didn’t know before.”
About Amazon India states that Mirzapur: The Movie released in Indian theatres on 4 September 2026. That release information establishes a theatrical date in India; it does not establish streaming availability.
