In a 2020 interview with Fresh Air, she described that experience as living “in the middle,” a position that could feel isolating but might also let her serve as a bridge.
How Jones says being biracial affected casting
Asked by Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air whether being biracial affected the roles she was considered for, Jones discussed the difficulty of fitting casting expectations for characters understood as either Black or white. The interview raised the possibility that she might be seen as “too light-skinned for a Black role or too Black for a role that’s explicitly or implicitly white.” These were questions about her own experience, not evidence of a universal casting rule or an industry-wide measure.
Jones also wanted the ethnicity of her characters to reflect her real life. When a role placed her in a family, she recalled feeling anxious about having to raise that issue with the director or writer. Her account points to a practical tension: a casting decision can shape not only who plays a character, but whether the character’s identity and family relationships are acknowledged in the story.
“In the middle”: outsider and possible bridge
Jones summed up her personal sense of the position in the interview: “Inherently, being biracial, you just live in the middle, you just do.” She also described feeling like an outsider, while seeing the possibility of being a bridge between people or experiences. The two ideas sit together in her account: a position that can make belonging feel uncertain may also offer a way to connect across boundaries.

Her remarks are personal testimony, not a definition of what being biracial means for everyone. They are most useful as a window into how one actor understood her identity and the expectations she encountered at work.
Her parents: Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton
Rashida Jones is the daughter of musician and producer Quincy Jones and actor Peggy Lipton. Their public careers provide context for her family story, but her comments about race and casting are her own. In a 2012 CBS Sunday Morning interview announcement, she was described as working across acting, singing, writing, and producing; the announcement also noted her father’s advice to become good at more than one thing.
Jones later directed Quincy, the 2018 documentary about her father. It offers a separate way to encounter Quincy Jones’s life and work, while her Fresh Air interview is the direct source for her reflections on biracial identity and casting.

Peggy Lipton died in May 2019. Quincy Jones died on November 4, 2024, at age 91. Those dates frame the family context, but they do not replace the focus of Jones’s own account: how she experienced racial categories and the roles attached to them.
