Rapture is a 2023 Garo-language fiction feature by Dominic Sangma, set in a village in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills. Through Kasan, a ten-year-old boy with night blindness, the film follows how disappearances, rumors about outsiders and an apocalyptic prophecy unsettle a community. Its darkness is both literal and symbolic: people struggle to see what is happening, and fear makes uncertainty dangerous.
What is Rapture about?
Also titled Rimdogittanga, Rapture begins with a night hunt for cicadas. When people go missing, rumors of kidnapping and suspicion of outsiders take hold. A pastor’s proclamation of an approaching period of darkness deepens the anxiety, and the village’s efforts to protect itself begin to feed collective panic.
The story is seen in part through Kasan, a boy with night blindness. His condition makes darkness a physical obstacle as well as a recurring image, linking what he can and cannot perceive to the village’s uncertainty. The film does not reduce that uncertainty to a simple contest between good and evil: its characters resist easy hero-and-villain labels.
Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath describes the film as examining the collision between gullibility and tolerance. Suspicion of outsiders gives that tension a social cost: fear can turn a desire for safety into xenophobia. These are conflicts in Sangma’s fictional story, not evidence about Garo people or beliefs as a whole.

Lantern-lit night scenes give darkness a practical presence, while Kasan’s night blindness and the prophecy extend it into the film’s emotional and spiritual register. In an SBS Hindi interview, Sangma said: “In the opening shot, it is pitch dark at night and the only way to navigate is to carry lanterns.” He added: “The idea I wanted to convey was that darkness can only be dispelled by carrying your own light.”
Sangma also described his preference for long takes: “I am in love with long takes.” He explained, “They capture time the way it is, rather than giving you information.” That approach favors observation over rapid, explanatory cutting; the viewer spends time with the scene rather than receiving every development as a plot clue. Ramnath’s report also notes the film’s layered focus, which allows details and people in different parts of the frame to coexist.
Who made Rapture?
Dominic Sangma wrote and directed the film, drawing in part on childhood memories and stories he heard about bogeymen seeking victims, according to Ramnath’s interview for Scroll. The festival catalog identifies it as a 127-minute Garo-language fiction feature. It lists Tojo Xavier as cinematographer, Mohan Kumar Valasala as editor, Vineet Vashishtha for sound and Anon Cheran Momin for music. Listed cast members include Torikhu A. Sangma, Handam R. Marak and Celestine K. Sangma.
The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, as reported by Scroll. Festival des 3 Continents gives May 15, 2024, as its French release date; that date is specific to France, not a worldwide release date.
