The next day, his family announced that he had died. The initial description was an onstage medical emergency; the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that his cause of death was hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
What happened to FatMan Scoop on stage?
On August 30, 2024, FatMan Scoop collapsed while performing at Hamden Town Center Park. Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett said he had a “medical emergency on stage” and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The Los Angeles Times reported that audience members and paramedics tried to provide life-saving assistance at the scene. These reports describe the emergency response; they are not the medical examiner’s later determination of cause.

When was his death announced, and how old was he?
His family announced his death on August 31, the day after the performance. The Associated Press’s September 25 report gives his age as 56 and notes that its earlier story had incorrectly reported 53.
What was FatMan Scoop’s cause of death?
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Freeman died from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a spokesperson quoted by the Associated Press. The Los Angeles Times separately reported that the medical examiner classified the manner of death as “natural.” The initial phrase “medical emergency” described what happened at the performance; the cause and manner were established later by the medical examiner.

How was FatMan Scoop remembered?
In a family statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times, his relatives described him as a father, brother, uncle, and friend. They wrote: “His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”
Freeman was also known for his work as a rapper and hypeman. The Los Angeles Times reported that “Be Faithful” broke through in 1999 and that its 2003 rerelease reached No. 1 on the singles charts in Britain and Ireland. In 2006, he won a Grammy in the short form music video category for Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control,” which featured him and Ciara.
