Common answers include bread, guap, racks and paper—but the words do not all mean precisely the same thing. Some are broad synonyms for money, while others evoke bundles or piles of cash, or can suggest a particular amount. Several also existed as slang before hip-hop.
What do rappers call money?
These ten terms appear in hip-hop vocabulary, though usage can vary by artist, region and context. The dates below describe documented historical use, not how common a word is today.
Bread
Bread means money. Dictionary.com records the American slang sense by at least the 1930s. The association with an essential food or livelihood is a plausible explanation, not a proven origin. Dictionary.com
Dough
Dough also means money. Dictionary.com records this slang sense by at least the 1830s—earlier than its date for bread. The familiar explanation links dough to bread as a source of livelihood, but the exact origin is not certain. Dictionary.com

Cheese
Cheese is a broad synonym for money. It does not, by itself, specify an amount. Dictionary.com
Cheddar
Cheddar means money, much like cheese. One popular theory connects the slang to government cheese distributed in welfare packages, but Dictionary.com presents this as a theory rather than a settled origin. Dictionary.com

Guap

Racks
Racks commonly means thousands of dollars. Dictionary.com associates the word’s popularization with a 2011 song titled “Racks”; Revolt identifies a track by YC featuring Future. Because the source descriptions are not consistent about the song’s attribution, the performer credit should not be treated as definitive here. Dictionary.com Revolt

C.R.E.A.M. stands for “Cash Rules Everything Around Me,” the title of Wu-Tang Clan’s 1994 song. How the terms differ
For a quick reading of a lyric, separate broad synonyms from words that add an image or possible amount:
- Broad money terms: bread, dough, cheese, cheddar and paper can all refer generally to money.
- Amount or image: racks commonly suggests thousands; bands suggests bundled bills; stacks suggests piles and can carry specific amounts in some usage.
- Context matters: a word’s meaning in a lyric depends on how the artist uses it. None of these definitions makes every term interchangeable in every line.
The food metaphors are easy to connect to livelihood, but an intuitive explanation is not proof of a word’s origin. Dictionary.com’s dates show that dough and bread were money slang before hip-hop; the same source places scrilla in rap in the 1990s and guap in rap in the 2000s, with their origins unclear. Dictionary.com
Other money slang you may hear
Guala, cake, Benjamins and scrilla are also used for money. Benjamins refers to $100 bills, which bear Benjamin Franklin’s portrait; Dictionary.com says Franklin has appeared on the $100 bill since 1914. The same source places scrilla in rap music since the 1990s while noting that its exact origin is unclear. Dictionary.com Revolt
