The alleged relationship between Randy Savage and Stephanie McMahon has not been established by the reporting reviewed here. Savage’s brother, Lanny Poffo, gave two differently worded responses: in 2018 he said he did not know whether the rumor was true; a 2015 feature quoted him calling it untrue. Neither statement is independent proof of what happened. The rumor’s origin is more clearly tied to a provocative taunt Poffo said Savage made after a dispute with Triple H.
What is known about the rumor?
There is no confirmed account in the cited reporting establishing that Savage and McMahon had a relationship. The most direct 2018 comment came from Poffo, Savage’s brother, in an interview with Wrestling Inc.: “I have absolutely no idea if the urban legend is true.” He added that the subject was private and asked readers to give Savage the benefit of the doubt.
That is a statement about Poffo’s knowledge and his unwillingness to speculate, not confirmation. A 2015 Sports Illustrated feature quotes Poffo describing the affair rumor as having “no truth whatsoever.” The accounts differ: the 2015 wording is a denial, while the 2018 wording explicitly says he did not know. The available reporting does not resolve that difference.
Where did the story come from?
Poffo connected the rumor’s spread to remarks Savage made about McMahon, who was Triple H’s wife. In Poffo’s account, Triple H had called Savage and Hulk Hogan “dinosaurs,” angering Savage. Savage then made provocative remarks in a 2003 video about taking Triple H’s wife. Poffo said people treated the taunt as literal and repeated it as a story.

A public taunt can explain how a rumor gained traction; it does not demonstrate that the alleged relationship occurred. The distinction matters because the claim is often repeated as though the remark itself were evidence.
Did the rumor explain Savage’s estrangement from WWE?
The cited accounts describe tensions between Savage and WWE, but they do not prove the rumor was the cause of his estrangement. Poffo’s account places the public taunt in the context of Savage’s anger at Triple H. Separately, Sports Illustrated reported that Savage wanted his father and brother inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame alongside him, while WWE wanted to induct Savage alone. That disagreement is another reported source of friction, not proof of the alleged relationship.

The chronology also includes later signs of contact and recognition. Sports Illustrated reported that Vince McMahon reached out to Savage in 2010, that WWE released a Randy Savage documentary DVD in 2014, and that Savage was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015. Those career-history events do not establish what happened between Savage and McMahon or settle every reason for the earlier distance.
What did Hulk Hogan say?
Wrestling Inc. reported in 2010 that Hogan was asked about the Savage–McMahon rumor and appeared surprised. He said he did not know why Savage had not returned to WWE. That reported reaction did not confirm the allegation. The Wrestling Inc. account is not a verified primary transcript of Hogan’s radio appearance, so it should be treated as reporting of his response rather than a direct transcript.

WWE later published an interview in which Hogan discussed Savage and their history, but the cited page does not establish the alleged relationship: Hulk Hogan opens up about Randy Savage, The Mega Powers and why WrestleMania V means so much to him.

- The allegation: The cited accounts do not establish that a relationship happened.
- Poffo’s comments: His 2015 remark was reported as a denial; in 2018 he said he did not know. Both are attributed to Savage’s brother, and neither is independent corroboration.
- The origin story: Poffo’s account links the rumor’s spread to Savage’s provocative remarks after the “dinosaurs” dispute. The remarks explain a possible source of the story, not its truth.
- The WWE tension: Poffo’s account of the Hall of Fame disagreement and the reported contact and honors provide context for Savage’s relationship with WWE, but they do not prove the rumor caused the estrangement.
- Hogan’s response: As reported, Hogan did not confirm the allegation and said he did not know why Savage had not returned.
The careful conclusion is therefore limited: the rumor exists, its reported origin has been described by Poffo, and the cited reporting does not establish it as fact.
