Rachael Lillis, the voice actor best known for playing Misty and Team Rocket’s Jessie in the English-language Pokémon series, died on August 10, 2024, after a battle with breast cancer. She was 55—not 46, as early reports stated. The Television Academy lists her birth date as July 8, 1969, and The Guardian later amended its report to correct her age.
Who was Rachael Lillis?
Lillis was an American voice actor whose work helped define the English-language Pokémon series for many viewers. Her best-known roles were Misty, one of the show’s central human characters, and Jessie, the sharp-tongued member of Team Rocket. She also voiced Pokémon including Jigglypuff, Vulpix, Venonat and Goldeen, according to The Guardian.
Her Pokémon work extended beyond the television series to films including Pokémon: The First Movie and Pokémon 2000. The Television Academy says she worked on more than 400 Pokémon episodes and lists credits in other animation, including Winx Club, Sonic X, Revolutionary Girl Utena and Berserk (Television Academy).
Why was her age reported incorrectly?
Some early coverage gave Lillis’s age as 46. That figure was incorrect: the Television Academy records her birth date as July 8, 1969, making her 55 when she died on August 10, 2024. The Guardian’s obituary was amended on August 14, 2024, to correct the age it had initially reported.
