Rabindra Kachharibari, the heritage property and memorial museum associated with Rabindranath Tagore in Shahjadpur, Bangladesh, was vandalised on June 10, 2025, two days after a local dispute. Reports agree on the dates and location but differ on whether the June 8 confrontation concerned motorcycle parking, entry tickets, or a parking ticket and alleged mistreatment of a visitor.
What happened at Rabindra Kachharibari
A group attacked the site in Shahjadpur upazila, Sirajganj district, on the morning of June 10, according to The Daily Star. Its report, citing police and local residents, said the attackers broke open the entrance at about 11:30 a.m. and damaged the auditorium, doors and windows. The custodian said the mansion that houses the memorial museum was not damaged.
The custodian also told The Daily Star that five to six people, including staff, were injured. That is an attributed estimate from the site’s custodian, not an independently confirmed injury count.
Why accounts differ about the June 8 dispute
The immediate trigger is not described identically across reports. The Daily Star’s June 10 account, based on police and local residents, characterised the June 8 incident as a quarrel between staff and a local visitor over motorcycle parking.

A June 18 account by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), summarising the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing’s account, described a visitor and his wife attempting to enter without tickets, followed by a verbal altercation and an alleged assault by staff. It said the visitor filed a police complaint naming six staff members, and that he and local residents staged a human-chain protest on June 10 before a group vandalised the auditorium and custodian’s office.
BSS also quoted the Ministry of Cultural Affairs as saying: “On June 8, a scuffle and fight broke out between the employee in charge of Shahjadpur Rabindra Kachari Bari and a visitor due to a misunderstanding and argument over a parking ticket.” This is the ministry’s account as reproduced by BSS, not an independently verified finding. Taken together, the reports establish a dispute involving a visitor and site staff, but not one agreed version of its precise cause or sequence.

What is known about the response
In its June 18 report, BSS said the district administration and Department of Archaeology had formed two committees, a criminal case had been filed, and five people had been arrested by that date. These are interim figures reported by BSS from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing account; they do not establish the investigation’s final outcome or any later court proceedings.
The site was reported closed to visitors after the attack, according to Scroll. The available reporting does not establish whether it has since reopened.

Political claims about motive
Indian political figures from the BJP and Trinamool Congress condemned the vandalism, with some making claims that it was communal or planned, as reported by Scroll. BSS said the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing rejected claims that the incident was communal or politically orchestrated and characterised it as a personal or local dispute. These are competing attributed statements; the cited accounts do not establish a political or communal motive as fact.

Rabindra Kachharibari is a memorial museum and heritage property connected to Tagore’s family and life. The Daily Star reported that Dwarkanath Tagore acquired the Shahjadpur estate in 1840, and that Rabindranath later visited and stayed there in phases. The reported damage was to the auditorium, doors and windows; the custodian said the mansion itself remained unharmed. The cited report does not establish damage to Tagore’s personal belongings or relics.
