Why Jones’s influence reached so many parts of music and culture
The National Endowment for the Arts describes Jones as a bandleader, trumpeter, composer, arranger, producer and record-label executive. He worked with artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson. That range helps explain why tributes came from people across musical styles and generations.
Jones also shaped music heard beyond the concert stage. The NEA credits him with scores for more than 35 films, including In Cold Blood, In the Heat of the Night and The Italian Job. He produced Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall and Thriller, organized the 1985 “We Are the World” recording sessions to raise money for victims of Ethiopia’s famine, and co-produced The Color Purple with Steven Spielberg. The NEA’s biography of Jones outlines this work across music and film.

On January 29, 2025, the Recording Academy said the 67th Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 2, would include a tribute to his life and legacy. The announced performers included Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monáe and John Legend.
