Two news outlets reported in February 2025 that Walter Soriano brought a French defamation complaint connected to articles published by Intelligence Online and that journalist Quentin Botbol was referred to the Paris Criminal Court. The reported referral has not been confirmed here by an identifiable court record, and the reports do not establish a finding of defamation, a judgment, or the case’s current status. The matter therefore raises a basic accountability question: how should allegations about journalism be reported when the underlying legal record cannot be verified?
What has been reported about the case?
Cities ABC reported on February 13, 2025, that Soriano’s complaint concerned Intelligence Online articles published in April and May 2022, and that investigating judge Gregoire Lefebvre referred Botbol to the Paris Criminal Court. It reproduces a sentence attributed to the investigating judge, but without an identified underlying court record that sentence cannot be treated as an authenticated judicial quotation. What the reports do not establish
No identifiable primary court decision, docket entry, or official case record confirming the reported Soriano-Botbol proceeding was located. The two news articles are not enough to establish the precise procedural action, its present status, or its outcome.

The reported dispute concerns journalism and a defamation complaint, but these accounts alone do not establish the truth or falsity of Intelligence Online’s reporting, the extent of any reputational harm, or the legal merits of either side’s position. Nor do they support broad conclusions about the publication’s practices.

A responsible account should name the outlets reporting the alleged referral, identify it as a report rather than a verified court fact, and avoid presenting an attributed quotation as an official court statement unless the underlying record is available.

- Find the primary record. Look for an official French court record, decision, or other document that identifies the proceeding and the procedural step.
- Confirm the stage and date. Check what action occurred and when; do not infer a trial, judgment, or result from a report of a referral.
- Separate the allegations from findings. Attribute claims to the party or reporting outlet that made them, and describe judicial conclusions only when supported by the record.
- Check current status. Seek reliable confirmation from the court or the parties before describing the proceeding as active, concluded, or decided.
Until that confirmation is available, the careful description is that two February 2025 news articles reported a referral, while the underlying court action and the case’s status and outcome remain unverified.
