Queens Review: Nat Geo’s Awe-Inspiring Docuseries Puts Message Before Authenticity

National Geographic’s Queens is visually spectacular and refreshingly centered on female animal leaders. Its storytelling can, however, blur observation and interpretation.

Queens is a visually striking National Geographic wildlife series that puts female animal leaders and matriarchies at its center. Its strongest tension is also its main critical question: the footage is often breathtaking, but narration and editing can shape animal behavior into a human-readable story of leadership and sisterhood. That makes the series compelling—and, at times, less restrained than observational wildlife documentary.

What is Queens about?

Queens follows female leaders and matriarchies across different animal societies and environments. The seven-part National Geographic series is narrated by Angela Bassett and premiered on March 4, 2024. At the time, the Television Academy reported it was streaming on Disney+ and Hulu; availability may now vary by country and date. The Television Academy’s series profile provides that original release context.

The premise shifts attention toward female animals and social behavior that wildlife programs may not always foreground. Rather than build every sequence around familiar spectacle such as a hunt or fight, the series aims to make leadership, relationships, and daily life part of the drama. That focus gives Queens a distinctive point of view, but it also means the framing deserves scrutiny.

Why is the series impressive?

The review’s clearest praise is for the filmmaking: intimate animal behavior, inventive camera work, vivid locations, a strong soundtrack, and images with genuine awe-inspiring scale. The visual craft makes the animals feel present rather than distant, and gives the series room to linger on interactions that a more action-driven program might pass over.

That approach also supports the show’s central ambition. By following female protagonists and matriarchies, Queens offers a different route into wildlife storytelling—not simply a collection of spectacular encounters, but a narrative about how animals live within social groups.

Where does the message risk overtaking the evidence?

The concern is not that the series has been shown to stage or fabricate events. The available evidence does not establish that. The more precise criticism is that narration and editing can make observed behavior seem to express human concepts such as leadership, power, or sisterhood more clearly than the footage alone can demonstrate.

It helps to separate three layers when judging that criticism:

  • Behavior: what the camera records animals doing.
  • Storytelling: how narration, music, and editing connect moments into a character-led arc.
  • Interpretation: the viewer’s judgment about whether that arc illuminates animal behavior or anthropomorphizes it.

The review finds that the series sometimes blurs the latter two layers. That is a defensible response to the storytelling, not an independent scientific ruling on every scene. The cited sources do not settle the biological accuracy of individual sequences.

Angela Bassett, who narrates and executive-produces the series, has described its intended message as cooperation, sacrifice, and female leadership across species. That explains the lens the creators want viewers to bring to the stories; it does not prove that animal societies map neatly onto human ideas about gender or leadership. National Geographic’s series page presents the project in its official context.

What did the female-led production set out to do?

The project grew from conversations between National Geographic executive Janet Han Vissering and Wildstar Films CEO Vanessa Berlowitz about a documentary on female-led lion and hyena societies. The idea expanded into a series about matriarchies and female dynasties.

The production profile describes an effort to build a female-led team across roles including producers, directors, cinematographers, editors, composition, and post-production. Co-executive producer, showrunner, and writer Chloe Sarosh explained the ambition this way: “A female-led team would bring authenticity and new voices [which had] never been done on a premium wildlife series.” The profile also reports that Sophie Darlington and Justine Evans trained, mentored, and supported five female filmmakers over three years. Those are meaningful production details, though representation behind the camera does not by itself settle questions about how animal behavior is interpreted on screen. British Cinematographer’s production profile describes the team and its approach.

Does the behind-the-scenes episode answer the authenticity criticism?

Director Faith Musembi has said she was proud of the authenticity of the stories and of the “Behind the Queens” episode, emphasizing that the people featured in it were proud of how they had been represented. Her comments offer a useful perspective on care toward the human participants in that episode. They do not resolve the separate question of whether the main series sometimes frames animal behavior too anthropomorphically.

That distinction matters: authenticity in representing people and restraint in interpreting animal behavior are related ideas, but they are not the same test.

Is Queens worth watching?

Yes, especially if you value ambitious wildlife cinematography and are interested in stories that foreground female animals. The series offers striking imagery and an unusual organizing perspective. Viewers who prefer a more strictly observational style may be less comfortable when narration and editing turn behavior into a clear social drama.

A useful way to watch is to notice when a sequence shows an animal’s action and when the soundtrack or narration supplies a motive or broader meaning. That distinction lets the visuals land while leaving room to question how confidently the series interprets what it sees.

For a current viewing option, check the catalog in your territory rather than relying on 2024 listings: the Television Academy reported Disney+ and Hulu availability at the time of the premiere, not a present-day global catalog status.
