Queen Margrethe’s final public appearance as Denmark’s monarch was on 4 January 2024, when she rode in the gilded Gold Coach from Amalienborg to Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen for the traditional New Year fete. She had announced her decision to abdicate four days earlier, and formally stepped down on 14 January. The abdication was unusual in Danish history, but the available evidence does not establish a specific controversy.
When was Queen Margrethe’s last public appearance?
On 4 January 2024, Margrethe travelled in the Gold Coach, drawn by six white horses, from Amalienborg to Christiansborg Palace. She attended the traditional New Year fete with officers of the Armed Forces and other invited representatives. The Associated Press identified the ride and event as her last public appearance as monarch before abdication. Associated Press coverage and photographs document the occasion.
Announcement, final appearance and abdication: the timeline
- 31 December 2023 — announcement: In her annual televised New Year Address, Margrethe said she would step down on 14 January and hand the throne to Crown Prince Frederik. The Royal House says the annual address is broadcast live on television and radio at 6 p.m. on 31 December. The official transcript of her 2023 address records the announcement.
- 4 January 2024 — last public appearance as monarch: She made the Gold Coach journey to the New Year fete at Christiansborg Palace.
- 14 January 2024 — formal abdication and succession: At a Council of State meeting at Christiansborg Palace, Margrethe signed her abdication declaration. The Royal House says the succession took place at that moment; Frederik became King Frederik X. Its programme for the succession gives the details.
Why did Queen Margrethe abdicate?
In her address, Margrethe said that after 52 years as queen, “the time takes its toll,” and that increasing ailments meant she could not undertake as much as before. She also explained that extensive back surgery in February 2023 had prompted thoughts about the future and whether it was the right moment to pass responsibility to the next generation. “I have decided that now is the right time,” she said. Those are the reasons she gave publicly; the cited sources do not establish additional private motives.
Why was the abdication described as unusual?
Margrethe had succeeded her father on 14 January 1972, and her reign lasted 52 years. The Royal House says Denmark had no tradition of abdication and that 1146 was the last time a Danish sovereign voluntarily gave up the throne before death. It also explains that section 6 of the Act on Succession to the Throne anticipates abdication and applies the act’s provisions in that circumstance. The official background is set out in the Royal House’s succession explainer. An unusual departure from tradition is not, by itself, evidence that the act was unlawful or that the decision was controversial.
