Why did Queen Camilla miss the engagement?
People reported that Buckingham Palace announced on November 5, 2024, that the Queen was unwell with a chest infection and that her doctors had advised a short period of rest. She withdrew from her engagements for the week.
People quoted the Palace statement as saying: “Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, for which her doctors have advised a short period of rest.” It also quoted the Palace saying she regretted withdrawing from the week’s engagements and hoped to attend that weekend’s Remembrance events. The original Palace publication was not independently located, so these remarks are attributed here as quoted by People.
Who stepped in for Queen Camilla?
Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, represented the Queen at the November 7 Field of Remembrance. According to People, she met event and charity representatives and laid Queen Camilla’s personal Cross of Remembrance on her behalf. The report characterized this as a rare occasion for the Duchess to fill in for Camilla at an official engagement.

What is the Field of Remembrance?
The Poppy Factory organizes the annual event at Westminster Abbey to honor Armed Forces personnel who died in conflict or war. People reported that the 2024 commemoration was in its 96th year and included 308 plots. The ceremony featured a prayer service, the laying of the Queen’s Cross of Remembrance, the Last Post, an excerpt from “For the Fallen” and a two-minute silence.
People also reported that Camilla had been patron of The Poppy Factory since 2013. The charity supports Armed Forces veterans and their families seeking employment.

What was reported about the following Remembrance events?
In a follow-up published November 9, 2024, People reported that Camilla would also miss that weekend’s Remembrance events. The report quoted a Palace statement saying she would mark the occasion privately and hoped to return to public duties early the following week. That was the schedule reported at the time; it does not establish what happened afterward or indicate anything about her current health or engagements.
