Vinod Rawat directs, writes, produces and stars as Bhupinder, known as Bhuppi, an aspiring actor who has adopted the screen name Aryan Shaw. After a humiliating career-related incident in Mumbai, he heads back to his Uttarakhand hometown, which he left after a dispute with his father. The story follows his journey through the hills rather than treating the return as a simple, triumphant homecoming.

On the road, Bhuppi reconnects with childhood friend Hemant (Hemant Pandey), now a taxi driver, and meets Dimple (Rita Heer), a life coach travelling to a remote area for reasons of her own. Their encounters give the film room for humour and companionship while keeping Bhuppi’s unsettled past in view. The film was released theatrically in India on June 21, 2024.
How does the film balance humour and harder themes?
The change from a cramped shared flat in Mumbai to open mountain landscapes gives Pushtaini a visual sense of release, but the hills are not presented as an uncomplicated refuge. The film also touches on scarce local work, migration from villages, the burdens carried by women who stay, and the family resentments and trauma Bhuppi brings back with him. The humour softens the journey without making those pressures disappear.

That tonal balance is central to the film’s appeal. In her Scroll review, Deepa Gahlot described it this way: “Pushtaini blends melancholy with gentle humour. A newbie enthusiasm makes the film a surprisingly satisfying watch. No expectations are raised, so none are dashed.” That is Gahlot’s critical judgment, not a promise that every viewer will respond the same way.
What works, and where does it fall short?
An unforced, personal scale
The film’s economical storytelling and unfussy charm suit a story built around a small set of relationships and a personal journey. Rather than relying only on mountain scenery, it contrasts city confinement with the openness of the hills and uses that shift to broaden the focus from Bhuppi’s career disappointment to the lives and constraints of the people around him.

Comedy and uneven dramatic intensity
Gahlot singles out Hemant Pandey as a major source of the comedy and calls his performance the most unpretentious. Her reservation is that some local non-professional actors do not bring enough emotional intensity to the film’s major life-changing decisions. That unevenness can make key moments land more softly than intended, even as the ensemble’s informal quality contributes to the film’s personal feel.
Who is likely to enjoy Pushtaini?
It is best suited to viewers who welcome small-scale independent dramas, gentle humour and a reflective homecoming story that does not disguise hardship. Its rough edges may be part of its appeal if an unpolished, personal approach feels more inviting than distracting. Viewers looking for tightly controlled performances or consistently intense drama may find the emotional peaks less convincing.
