Pushpa: The Rise is worth watching if you want an energetic Allu Arjun performance, regionally rooted action and a prominent soundtrack. Its familiar storytelling and some uneven technical choices may frustrate viewers looking for a tightly paced, consistently polished drama. That balance—plenty of style, with some substance beneath it—is also the framing of Scroll’s 2021 review headline.
What is Pushpa: The Rise about?
Pushpa Raj, played by Allu Arjun, is a coolie who enters the smuggling trade in red sandalwood, a rare wood that grows in Andhra, according to Apple TV’s synopsis. The film is set in Andhra Pradesh and draws on the Chittoor dialect. The Times of India’s film listing describes it as a rustic masala film built around its regional setting, punch dialogues and action.

The setup gives the film a specific local texture, rather than making it a generic crime story. Its appeal, though, rests heavily on the lead performance and the scale and mood of the presentation.
What works best?
Allu Arjun’s performance
Allu Arjun is the most consistent point of praise across the reviews. The Times of India and India Today both frame the film as his show, with India Today identifying his performance as one of its major strengths. If the central attraction for you is a charismatic star driving an action drama, this is the strongest reason to give it a chance.

Music and regional flavor
Devi Sri Prasad’s music is another prominent asset in the India Today review, while The Times of India says the music fits the story. The latter also cautions that the background score can feel underwhelming at times, so the soundtrack is not a guarantee of consistent impact in every scene. The Chittoor dialect and regional grounding add to the film’s distinct character.
Where does the film fall short?
A familiar story
India Today calls the drama cliched, and Scroll’s headline, “Lots of style and a bit of substance,” signals a similar reservation about how much the film’s swagger is matched by its storytelling. Those are critical judgments rather than objective measures, but they point to a clear taste divide: viewers drawn primarily to performance and spectacle may be more satisfied than viewers seeking an unusually fresh plot.
Rank #2
Uneven polish
The Times of India critic says the film’s technical cracks show through and attributes them to a rushed release schedule. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not independently established production history. The same review finds the background score uneven even while praising the music’s fit with the story.
Scroll’s reviewer also felt that Fahadh Faasil’s much-hyped addition was a “damp squib.” Treat that as one critic’s response to his contribution, not a consensus about the cast. The Times of India listing names Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil and Rao Ramesh among the principal cast.

Who is likely to enjoy Pushpa: The Rise?
The trade-off is between star-led style and narrative freshness. Consider what you most want from an action drama:
| If you value… | What the reviews suggest |
|---|---|
| Allu Arjun’s screen presence | A strong reason to watch; multiple reviews place his performance at the center of the film’s appeal. |
| Music and regional texture | A notable part of the experience, though The Times of India says the score is uneven at points. |
| A novel, tightly constructed plot | A possible mismatch; India Today calls the drama cliched, and Scroll’s headline suggests style outweighs substance. |
| A fully self-contained story | The cited reviews do not establish how completely the film resolves its story, so viewers prioritizing closure should check a spoiler-aware synopsis before watching. |
Verdict: Is Pushpa: The Rise worth watching?
Yes, if you want an assertive Allu Arjun-led action drama with a strong regional identity and music that helps shape its appeal. Be more cautious if you want tight pacing, polished execution throughout or an especially original story. In short, the style is the safer bet; the substance will depend more on your tolerance for familiar plotting and unevenness.
