Season one follows emergency-room residents through a hurricane, hospital crises, and a divisive workplace allegation, while flashbacks reveal the complicated history between residents Danielle “Danny” Simms and Xander Phillips.
What is PULSE about?
The series brings together two kinds of pressure: emergencies in a busy emergency room and conflicts among the people working there. At Maguire Medical Center, residents handle a surge of patients as a hurricane approaches Miami and the hospital faces problems with its backup generators. At the same time, a divisive allegation at the hospital complicates workplace relationships.
The Danny and Xander storyline unfolds partly through flashbacks, which gradually show the history behind their relationship. Creator Zoe Robyn described the show’s interest in the overlap between work and personal life: “The complications that arise — between what’s going on off the clock and on the clock — can get messy. It can get confusing. That’s what we wanted to explore with Pulse.” (Netflix Tudum)
Who is in the cast?
- Willa Fitzgerald plays Danielle “Danny” Simms, a third-year emergency-medicine resident.
- Colin Woodell plays Xander Phillips, the emergency-medicine chief resident.
- Jack Bannon plays Tom Cole, a surgical resident.
- Justina Machado, Jessie T. Usher, Jessy Yates, Chelsea Muirhead, and Daniela Nieves are also among the principal cast listed by Netflix.
What happens in season one?
The season’s ten episodes move from an approaching hurricane and an overwhelmed ER into the aftermath, as patient volume and personal conflicts continue to test the staff. Later episodes include a nightclub fire and the start of a new academic year. Netflix’s episode summaries establish these story beats without requiring viewers to know medical terminology.
