PSG won the first leg 3-1 in Paris on 9 April; Villa took the return 3-2 at Villa Park on 15 April, leaving them one goal short of forcing extra time.
What was the aggregate score?
PSG won the two-legged quarter-final 5-4. The tie swung dramatically: Villa scored first in Paris, but PSG built a two-goal cushion; in Birmingham, PSG went two goals ahead on the night before Villa’s three-goal response made the closing minutes tense.
| Leg | Score | Aggregate after the match |
|---|---|---|
| First leg, Parc des Princes, 9 April 2025 | PSG 3-1 Aston Villa | PSG led 3-1 |
| Second leg, Villa Park, 15 April 2025 | Aston Villa 3-2 PSG | PSG advanced 5-4 |
How did the first leg unfold in Paris?
Morgan Rogers gave Villa the lead in the 35th minute with a well-worked attack. Désiré Doué equalized four minutes later, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead in the 49th. Nuno Mendes scored in stoppage time, at 90+2, to make it 3-1.
That late goal mattered because it turned a narrow one-goal advantage into a two-goal lead before the return. Villa manager Unai Emery said afterward that the third goal did not change his team’s intention to go to the second leg looking for a win. PSG coach Luis Enrique said the late score helped his side’s confidence. UEFA’s first-leg report records the goals and post-match comments.

Why did Villa win the second leg but still go out?
PSG struck early in Birmingham. Achraf Hakimi scored in the 11th minute and Mendes added another in the 27th, putting PSG 2-0 ahead on the night and 5-1 up on aggregate. Villa then launched its comeback: Youri Tielemans scored in the 34th, John McGinn in the 55th, and Ezri Konsa in the 57th.
Villa’s 3-2 victory cut PSG’s aggregate lead to one goal, but it did not erase it. A fourth Villa goal would have tied the overall score and sent the contest to extra time; Villa did not find it. UEFA’s match report notes key saves by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, including efforts against Tielemans and Marco Asensio, as Villa pressed for the goal that would have leveled the tie. What changed in Villa’s approach between the legs?
UEFA Technical Observer Michael O’Neill described Villa’s return-leg plan as a move away from the lower defensive block it had used in Paris. At Villa Park, Villa pressed higher, sought duels in the opposition half, and accepted greater risk of PSG attacking into space behind the press while chasing the deficit. O’Neill summarized the intention: “Villa wanted to play in the opposition half and they wanted duels.”
UEFA’s tactical analysis reports that Villa’s average distance from its own goal when making defensive actions rose from 30.9 metres in the first leg to 50 metres in the second. It characterizes Villa as spending 49% of the first match in a low block. The same analysis reports 36 pressures in the Paris half in the first leg versus 161 in the second, and six ball recoveries in Paris territory versus 34. These are figures reported in UEFA’s analysis, not independent measurements. The numbers illustrate the higher-risk press behind Villa’s comeback without, by themselves, explaining the result. UEFA’s tactical analysis by O’Neill sets out the comparison.

Emery praised Villa’s effort and framed the run to the quarter-final as a step toward the level he wants the club to reach. Enrique said PSG had dominated the opening phase and scored twice, but then made mistakes and paid for them. His comment captured the contrast of the return leg: PSG’s early control created a commanding aggregate position, while Villa’s response made the finish far less comfortable than that start suggested. Both comments are from UEFA’s second-leg report.
