Protector gives Milla Jovovich a mother-led rescue mission with the relentless momentum of Taken, but its hard-hitting premise is weakened by murky action and blunt exposition. Jovovich brings physical commitment to the role; whether that is enough depends on how much you value a familiar revenge-thriller setup over clear, polished execution.
What is Protector about?
Directed by Adrian Grünberg and written by Bong-Seob Mun, this 2026, 90-minute, R-rated action film stars Jovovich as Nikki, a former service member whose daughter, Chloe, is kidnapped by a sex-trafficking syndicate. Nikki sets out to find her, while law enforcement and the military try to stop her. The story includes a 72-hour deadline, according to RogerEbert.com’s March 6, 2026 review. That review also flags an eleventh-hour twist, which this spoiler-light account leaves untouched.

The trafficking plot is a fictional thriller device here, not a guide to real-world trafficking or evidence about how such crimes typically occur.
Is Protector basically Taken with a mother in the lead?
That is a useful shorthand for the setup, not a claim that the film directly copies Taken. RogerEbert.com and The A.V. Club both draw attention to the familiar rescue-thriller framework, with the parental role centered on a mother. The comparison captures the pursuit, ticking clock, and single-minded effort to recover a kidnapped child; it does not, by itself, say whether the film makes that formula compelling.
#1 Best Overall
- Good versus evil! Bring home the battle for the heart of Eternia with these four 5.5-inch hero and villain action figures based on the 2026 live action Masters of the Universe movie.
- Accurate movie look! These MOTU toys are based on the character appearances in the movie, including actor likenesses. With 14 movable joints, they're ready for action moves and battle poses.
- Heroes! The Most Powerful Man in the Universe, He-Man, and his Royal Guard Duncan, Man-At-Arms, are designed with likenesses of actors Nicholas Galitzine and Idris Elba.
- Villains! The Lord of Destruction, Skeletor, teams up with Goat Man, an exclusive figure, accurate to the character played by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson.
- Key accessories included! Each figure includes a signature weapon accessory.
Punch Drunk Critics offers a more sympathetic angle, emphasizing the mother-daughter bond and describing the premise as a mother’s-perspective version of Taken. That relationship may give the familiar structure an emotional hook for some viewers, even as the film leans on well-worn genre machinery.
How well do the action and storytelling work?
Jovovich commits physically
Monica Castillo’s RogerEbert.com review recognizes Jovovich’s physical commitment and constant action presence. The movie clearly gives its lead a demanding rescue mission rather than treating her as a bystander to the violence.

- Our collection of Alien Q-Figs just got bigger, badder and a hell of a lot more terrifying.
- The Alien Queen is a true apex predator of the galaxy and the head of the xenomorph caste colony.
- Inspired by the iconic sci-fi action/horror film Aliens, our Alien Queen Q-Fig Max Elite brings you her majesty just as she’s about to exact her revenge on Ripley.
- Her barbed tail nearly wraps around the entirety of the starship-themed diorama base, and her razor sharp teeth are ready to sever, well, anything.
- The base of the Alien Queen connects with the Ripley Q-Fig, allowing you to display them together as they meet in pitched battle..Stands approximately 6" tall.
The action can be hard to follow
Castillo criticizes the fight staging and editing as choppy, and says some scenes are so dark that the action is difficult to make out. Those are consequential flaws in a film whose appeal depends heavily on watching Nikki fight her way toward her daughter. A brutal tone is not the same as legible or effective action.
The script explains too much
Castillo also faults the narration and dialogue for spelling out ideas that the story could leave to the audience. In a pursuit thriller, that can blunt urgency: instead of letting the rescue and the relationship carry the stakes, the film repeatedly states them. The result, in her assessment, is a mismatch between Jovovich’s forceful performance and the writing and filmmaking around it.

What are critics and audiences saying?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus characterizes the film as “Only intermittently redeemed by Milla Jovovich’s ferocious performance amid its otherwise ridiculous and uninspired execution, Protector veers into baffling, trope-leaden revenge flick territory.” The wording is the site’s consensus, not a quote from a single critic.
In a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot observed October 5, 2026, Protector had a 17% Tomatometer from 30 reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter from 50+ verified ratings. These are time-sensitive audience and critic aggregates, not fixed ratings; the audience figure also comes from a smaller, differently constituted pool than a broad survey of all viewers. The gap suggests a more favorable response among the verified users who rated it than among the critics counted at that time, but neither score explains why individual viewers liked or disliked the film.
Quick Recap
Who is likely to enjoy Protector?
- Consider it if you want a brisk, violent rescue premise, like Jovovich’s action work, and are willing to accept familiar plotting and uneven craft.
- Look elsewhere if you need cleanly staged, easy-to-follow fights or subtle dialogue and character writing. Those are precisely the areas Castillo identifies as weaknesses.
- Keep expectations modest if you are looking for a fresh alternative to Taken. The mother-centered angle is a variation on the familiar structure, not a guarantee that the film transcends it.
