That is a critic’s response to Project Hail Mary, not evidence about how Starfighter will turn out. Still, it points to qualities that could travel well: making a capable but imperfect character likable, balancing jokes with danger, and giving an expansive space story a personal emotional thread.
How Starfighter differs—and what is known
Project Hail Mary is science-fiction centered on scientific discovery; Star Wars is space fantasy with a different mythology and tone. The appeal is not that Gosling is repeating Ryland Grace as a pilot, or that the films share a story world. There is no documented narrative or production connection between them. The comparison is about performance: his recent space adventure offers a fresh example of how he handles humor, problem-solving and an emotionally legible partnership.

Lucasfilm describes Star Wars: Starfighter as a standalone adventure in a period not previously explored in the franchise. The current official listing gives the theatrical release date as May 28, 2027, names Shawn Levy as director and Jonathan Tropper as screenwriter, and identifies Gosling as both star and executive producer. Lucasfilm’s current character announcement calls his character, Kade Auberon, “a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.” Its synopsis describes a cynical rogue drawn into danger after encountering his mysterious past. That is teaser framing, not a complete plot.
The film is new in its story and setting, but it is not outside the established timeline: Lucasfilm said it takes place about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Its earlier production announcement said filming began in the U.K. in fall 2025 and named Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams among the cast. None of that establishes a particular conflict, Force connection, continuity payoff or character arc.
Why the casting is promising, but not a guarantee
The most persuasive link between the films is the contrast in how much we know. In Project Hail Mary, Grace’s mission and his evolving connection with Rocky are central to the premise. For Starfighter, Lucasfilm has offered Kade’s rough-edged description and the starfighter hook, but not enough about his relationships or the wider story to judge whether the film will give Gosling a similarly strong emotional partnership.
That uncertainty matters. A charismatic lead can make an adventure more inviting, but the script, direction, supporting cast and character relationships still determine whether the story works. Levy has described Starfighter as embracing the Star Wars themes of “hope, family and adventure,” while stressing that it explores a previously unseen period. The promise is a fresh adventure with familiar thematic DNA—not a confirmed return to the science-led, two-person dynamic of Project Hail Mary.
