Andy Weir’s 2021 novel gives Grace more room to reason through science and spend time alone; the Ryan Gosling film streamlines that material and brings his bond with Rocky to the foreground. This spoiler-aware comparison looks at four notable differences between the book and movie. They are useful points of comparison, not an official ranking of every change.
Spoilers ahead: The sections below discuss plot and rescue details from both versions.
1. The film adds Carl as Grace’s human sounding board
Carl is an added character in the film. He provides security and, more importantly, gives Grace someone to talk to during the Earth-side setup and the mission’s early stretch. That lets the movie turn some of Grace’s thoughts into dialogue, humor and interaction.
In the novel, Grace’s internal narration can carry those moments directly. A film cannot show a character thinking for long without finding a screen language for it; Carl gives the story a conversational outlet and helps make Grace’s situation playable rather than purely narrated.

2. The film streamlines Grace’s solo science
The novel spends longer with Grace working through problems on his own, including the steps and reasoning behind his scientific discoveries. The film compresses much of that solo problem-solving and scientific explanation, making room for humor and character work while bringing the emotional connection between Grace and Rocky forward.
That is a shift in emphasis, not an absence of science. The book can pause for a detailed explanation in Grace’s voice; the film has to balance explanation with visible action, pacing and the developing relationship. If the process of working out a scientific puzzle is a major part of what you enjoy, the novel offers more time with it.

3. The ship and a rescue sequence are reworked
The film gives the Hail Mary a different layout and more visual space. It also changes the actions around Grace being incapacitated during an attempt to collect material from Adrian. In Space.com’s scene-by-scene comparison, Rocky gets himself back to safety in the film, while the novel gives Grace a more involved rescue and attempted treatment sequence.
Those are specific scene-level changes reported by Space.com, rather than details attributed to the directors. The versions reach a similar emotional beat by different actions: the film can make the ship and the crisis immediately legible on screen, while the book has room to follow Grace’s experience and decisions more closely.

4. The relationship’s progression is more compressed on screen
The book gives Grace and Rocky months of joint work and language learning. The film’s timeline feels faster, compressing the route to key emotional moments even as it preserves the relationship’s central arc.
Screenwriter Drew Goddard described the story’s mutual learning in The Credits: “We’re all teachers and students, should we choose to be.” He also said, “They’re not going to survive unless they figure out how to empathize and see the world from the other’s point of view.” That idea of communication across difference remains central even when the movie moves through the progression more quickly.

What the movie keeps from the novel
The film adapts Weir’s 2021 novel, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard and direction by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The directors have described the challenge as fitting a long story into a feature. Miller said, “It’s a 16-hour audio book, and fitting that into a movie means that some plot mechanics have to go.” Lord said, “He kept the flashback structure, kept all of the surprises, kept the ending. All the stuff that made it unique remain.”
So the differences above do not mean the film discards the novel’s main design. The directors specifically say it retains the flashback structure, surprises and ending. The adaptation trims and reshapes material to fit its format while keeping the relationship at the story’s heart.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose the novel if you want more of Grace’s scientific reasoning, solo problem-solving and the longer progression of his work with Rocky. Read Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary for the source text.
- Choose the film if you prefer a more compressed pace, visible action, and a relationship carried through performance and dialogue.
- Try both if you want to compare how internal narration becomes screen action. Neither medium is automatically the better version; each makes the Grace–Rocky connection work in a different way.
Space.com frames its comparison with a 496-page book and a 156-minute film. Those are the figures used in that outlet’s 2026 comparison, not a universal page count across editions or a guarantee of runtime across markets and cuts.
