The 2009 Season 4 ending and Prison Break: The Final Break leave him presumed dead after his sacrifice. The 2017 revival overturns that apparent ending: Michael faked his death, survives the showdown with Jacob, and reunites with Sara, their son Mike, and Lincoln. Whether he has found lasting peace is less certain.
Why does the original ending make Michael seem dead?
The original story’s apparent ending is in the 2009 Season 4 finale, followed by The Final Break. The official episode catalog lists Season 4’s two-part finale on May 15, 2009, then lists The Final Break separately on May 22. Its synopsis follows Michael as he tries to break Sara out of prison, filling in the events that lead into the presumed-death story.
That ending presents Michael’s sacrifice as the end of his life. But it is not the final word on his fate once the revival is included.
How does the revival explain Michael’s survival?
Season 5 begins seven years after Michael was presumed dead. Its opening episode introduces clues that he may still be alive, and Episode 7 says Sara discovers the real reason he faked his death. The revival therefore makes the apparent death a staged one, rather than leaving his survival as an unresolved theory.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The two endings are best understood as successive points in the story: the 2009 ending depicts Michael as dead, while the 2017 continuation explains that he survived and why he stayed away.

Afterward, Michael reunites with Sara and their son, Mike. He is alive, free from the immediate conflict with Jacob, and back with his family.
Does Michael get a happily ever after?
The released finale offers a hopeful reunion, but it does not establish that Michael is fully at peace. In a May 30, 2017 Entertainment Tonight interview, Wentworth Miller said Michael is reunited with the people he loves while questioning whether he can be at peace after everything he has endured.

Creator Paul T. Scheuring said the ending was scripted to be more ambiguous: Michael would look over his shoulder, hinting at paranoia that remained with him. Scheuring clarified that this specific look-back was not filmed. In the released scene, Michael looks toward Sara, Mike, Lincoln, and Sheba; the reunion is real, but the alternate scripted moment is not part of what viewers see.
