YouTube’s bitrate ranges are recommendations—not targets to push to the maximum. Test with representative motion and audio before going live, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast.
Which PRISM settings make a YouTube stream stable?
Start with YouTube’s ingest guidance, then choose an output your particular computer and connection can handle. The ranges below are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not independently tested presets and do not guarantee that a connection can sustain a stream.
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure live-ingest protocol.
- Rate control: Choose constant bitrate (CBR) where available.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies no more than four seconds between keyframes.
- Video codec: YouTube’s current live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Availability in PRISM may depend on the app version and your hardware.
- Resolution and FPS: Select the output that fits the planned program and that your encoder and upload connection can sustain consistently.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current recommended ranges for 1080p are:
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps | 4–10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps | 4–12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a claim that a given computer or network can sustain the upper end. A higher bitrate does not automatically make a stream more stable or better: if your upload connection fluctuates or your encoder cannot keep up, the stream may stall or drop frames. Pick a reliable setting for the connection, rather than aiming for the biggest number in the range. The figures and requirements are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026.

Set up PRISM Live Studio for a YouTube broadcast
PRISM’s interface labels can vary with app version, operating system, graphics hardware, and the selected service. Use the current in-app connection flow rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Connect YouTube: In PRISM Live Studio, connect the YouTube channel through the app’s current account-connection flow. In YouTube Studio, select or create the intended live stream and follow the prompts for connecting your encoder.
- Choose the stream and ingest: Confirm that PRISM is connected to the intended YouTube channel and live event. Use RTMPS when the connection flow offers a protocol choice, as recommended by YouTube.
- Configure output: In PRISM’s encoder or output settings, select a supported codec and CBR where available. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Choose resolution, FPS, and bitrate together: Use YouTube’s applicable bitrate range as a starting point, while accounting for your upload capacity and the computer’s encoding load. Do not raise bitrate without checking that both can sustain it.
- Run a preflight test: YouTube recommends a speed test and a test stream before the event. Include audio and video motion similar to the real program; a static screen may not reveal how the planned content will behave.
- Monitor while live: Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. If problems appear, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than assuming the bitrate should be increased.
YouTube’s guidance says to test before starting a live stream. Read the current recommendations at YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
H.264, AV1, or H.265: which should you choose?
YouTube lists all three as supported live video codecs, but the bitrate recommendations differ and your encoder must actually support the codec you select. For 1080p30 and 1080p60, YouTube’s AV1/H.265 recommendations are lower than its H.264 ranges in the table above. That does not by itself mean AV1 or H.265 is the right choice for every setup; confirm PRISM and your encoding hardware offer the option and test it on the intended machine.
- H.264: Use it when it is the supported, practical option in your setup. Apply the H.264 range for the resolution and FPS you selected.
- AV1 or H.265/HEVC: Consider these only when your PRISM and hardware configuration supports them for the chosen service and workflow. Use their corresponding YouTube recommendation, not the H.264 range.
Software encoding versus hardware encoding
Encoding uses computer resources as well as network capacity. If PRISM’s stream is struggling and your computer has a dedicated graphics card, PRISM recommends selecting its hardware encoder option. The encoder’s name can differ by graphics-card manufacturer. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee: test the selected encoder with your intended stream settings before the event.

PRISM’s performance guidance also recommends lowering broadcast resolution, bitrate, and FPS when performance is poor. See PRISM’s desktop performance optimization guide.
Fixed bitrate or PRISM adaptive bitrate?
PRISM describes adaptive bitrate as real-time analysis of network conditions that adjusts bitrate and FPS. It can help respond to changing conditions, but it cannot create upload capacity that is not available. PRISM warns that inadequate network capacity can still result in poor viewer quality. A preflight test and a sustainable output choice remain important.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my PRISM stream stuttering or unstable?
- Stream-health warnings or interruptions: Repeat a speed test and test stream, then lower bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. If needed, reduce resolution and FPS as well.
- Encoding strain: Lower resolution, bitrate, and FPS. If a dedicated GPU is installed, try PRISM’s hardware encoder option and test again.
- Settings exceed what the connection can reliably deliver: Do not treat YouTube’s maximum recommended bitrate as a required target. Choose a more reliable quality level based on the measured connection and verify it with a representative test.
- Uncertain connection consistency: If the computer can connect to the router by cable, Ethernet is an optional way to connect. Neither YouTube nor PRISM says it is required or that it guarantees stability; it will not correct a weak ISP connection, overloaded computer, or incorrect encoder configuration.
PRISM’s troubleshooting recommendations are to lower resolution, bitrate, and FPS, and to use a hardware encoder when a dedicated graphics card is available. Interface and encoder names vary across systems.

HDR is a separate YouTube workflow
Do not apply PRISM’s HDR output recipe to an ordinary SDR stream. For YouTube HDR, PRISM documents a distinct configuration: select the YouTube-HLS service, use Advanced output mode, choose H.265/HEVC at 10,000 Kbps, and set the documented HDR color format, color space, and range. This bitrate is PRISM’s published HDR recommendation, not a general SDR setting. Follow the color-setting details in PRISM’s YouTube HDR streaming guide.
YouTube’s broader ingest guidance also identifies H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in its listed workflow. Use HDR only when the source and complete production workflow are compatible; for standard SDR, use the ordinary output guidance above.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than broadcast live from PRISM, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed.
