You can print and fold a Star Wars droid papercraft at home, but the title alone does not identify one specific design. The available examples range from a standing R2-D2 display model to a BB-8 paper toy and an articulated Imperial Probe Droid marionette. Choose the matching template first; its own diagram determines the paper, tools and assembly order.
Choose a droid template before you print
These examples are not interchangeable: they differ in size, construction and complexity. Compare the template itself and its instructions before gathering supplies.
| Design | Format and build | Paper and tools |
|---|---|---|
| R2-D2 | Five-page PDF with numbered tabs; a standing display model with a dome, body, legs and optional holographic projectors. | Disney/Lucasfilm says regular paper or cardstock can be used. Glue or double-sided tape attaches tabs. View the R2-D2 papercraft PDF. |
| BB-8 | Fold Up Toys describes a two-piece model on one A4 page. | The publisher recommends 250 gsm cardstock for best results, but says its models should also work on standard A4 printer paper. View the BB-8 model and instructions. |
| Imperial Probe Droid marionette | A more involved articulated craft, rather than a simple folded display model. | Its Disney/Lucasfilm template calls for heavy cardstock or thin chipboard, among other materials, and specifies adult handling for cutting, hot-melt gluing and spray painting. View the Imperial Probe Droid marionette template. |
These examples illustrate different project types; they are not an exhaustive or verified list of currently available Star Wars templates. The listed paper sizes and weights are specific to their respective projects, not universal requirements.
Gather supplies that match the instructions
For a basic paper model, start with the printed template, scissors, and the adhesive specified by its instructions. Cardstock can make a sturdier model, but use the weight and printer size the chosen template recommends. For the BB-8 page, Fold Up Toys recommends 250 gsm cardstock while noting standard A4 printer paper can work; Disney/Lucasfilm allows regular paper or cardstock for its R2-D2 model.
#1 Best Overall
Some designs need more than scissors and glue. The Imperial Probe Droid marionette template lists heavy cardstock or thin chipboard, transfer paper, a pen, a scoring implement, heavy-duty scissors or a craft knife, a straightedge, a self-healing cutting mat, hot-melt glue, string and dowels. Do not assume those supplies—or that more hazardous construction method—are needed for a simpler droid.
Fold Up Toys notes that some cutouts may need a craft knife and suggests adult help for younger builders. It also describes scoring fold lines with a craft knife or an empty ballpoint pen as options for its models. Check the chosen template’s safety guidance; the Disney/Lucasfilm marionette template explicitly says, “Cutting, hot-melt gluing, and spray painting is intended for adults only.”

Print, cut, fold and assemble in the template’s order
Most paper models distinguish cut lines from fold lines. The exact marks and assembly sequence vary, so use the instructions that accompany your chosen design rather than combining steps from different droids.
For the R2-D2 model
- Print the five-page Disney/Lucasfilm template on regular paper or cardstock.
- Cut out the pieces and fold along the dashed lines.
- Use glue or double-sided tape to fasten the numbered tabs. Follow the PDF’s sequence: close the dome and body, then assemble and attach the legs; add the holographic projectors if desired.
- Align and attach the legs as directed so the model can stand.
For the BB-8 model
- Print the two-piece design on A4 paper or cardstock, using the paper choice described on its page.
- Cut around the outline, fold the dotted lines, and glue the numbered tabs as instructed.
- Score fold lines only if useful for this design, and follow the page’s guidance about any cutouts that need a craft knife.
The Probe Droid marionette is a separate, more elaborate project: follow its own diagram and safety notes rather than applying the R2-D2 or BB-8 steps to it.

Decide whether you want a folded model or an articulated craft
If you want a manageable print-and-fold activity, the R2-D2 and BB-8 examples have clearer basic paper-model workflows. If the goal is an articulated marionette, expect additional materials and adult-directed work; the Probe Droid template is the example here. A separate building-toy option is LEGO’s Creative Play Droid Builder, set 75392, listed by LEGO as a 2024 set with 1,186 pieces for ages 9 and up. It is a conventional building toy, not a printable papercraft model. See LEGO’s instructions listing for set 75392.
