How Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones met and became engaged
The Royal Family’s official biography records their engagement and marriage, but not the couple’s first meeting. ELLE, citing BBC History Extra, reports that Margaret and photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones met at a dinner party hosted by Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, Margaret’s lady-in-waiting, in 1958. They reportedly grew closer later when Armstrong-Jones was assigned to photograph Margaret. ELLE’s timeline presents this as an account of their courtship, not an official date.
ELLE also relays a BBC account that Armstrong-Jones proposed in October 1959, on the day Margaret learned that Peter Townsend was to remarry. This detail comes from retrospective biographical reporting. The Royal Family confirms that Queen Elizabeth II announced her consent to the engagement in February 1960; ELLE dates the public announcement to February 26.
The 1960 wedding and Armstrong-Jones’s new title
Margaret and Armstrong-Jones married at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 1960. The Royal Family confirms the date and venue, and the National Portrait Gallery catalogs a wedding postcard dated that day. The wedding also drew a substantial television audience: the UK Parliament’s archival page reports that more than 20 million viewers watched the televised service, without specifying when that audience figure was measured.

In October 1961, Armstrong-Jones was created Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley, according to the Royal Family. He is often referred to as Lord Snowdon in accounts of the marriage.
Their children
Margaret and Armstrong-Jones had two children:
- David Albert Charles, born November 3, 1961. The National Portrait Gallery identifies him as David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon.
- Sarah Frances Elizabeth, born May 1, 1964. The National Portrait Gallery identifies her as Lady Sarah Chatto.
Reported marital difficulties and separation
Retrospective accounts describe growing tension during and after the couple’s 1965 U.S. trip, as well as infidelity and increasing distance. Those descriptions of private conduct are reported interpretations, not findings established by the Royal Family’s official account. The available record does not establish one definitive cause for the marriage’s end.

On March 19, 1976, the couple’s separation was announced. ELLE reproduces the Buckingham Palace statement:
“HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and the Earl of Snowdon have mutually agreed to live apart. The Princess will carry out her public duties and functions unaccompanied by Lord Snowdon. There are no plans for divorce proceedings.”

ELLE reports that Snowdon was surprised by the announcement. That reaction, like the accounts of earlier private tensions, is attributed to secondary reporting rather than the official record.

The separation announcement in March 1976 did not itself end the marriage. The Royal Family states that the marriage was dissolved in May 1978. ELLE reports that Kensington Palace announced the couple’s decision to formally end it on May 10, after two years apart; that reported announcement date is distinct from the official biography’s month of dissolution.

ELLE also reports that the former spouses remained on friendly terms and attended family events, including their daughter Sarah’s 1994 wedding. Such descriptions of their relationship after divorce are retrospective characterizations.
