Princess Isabella, daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik X, turned 18 on 21 April 2025. The Royal House of Denmark marked her birthday that day by releasing official gala portraits photographed by Steen Evald. The images were made in the Knights’ Hall at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg, with royal insignia and a miniature portrait of her father among the details identified by the Royal House.
When the portraits were released
The Royal House’s English gallery is dated 21 April 2025 and says the portraits were released for the first time to mark Isabella’s 18th birthday. Its wording reads: “To mark the occasion of HRH Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday on April 21, 2025 official gala portraits of the Princess are being released for the first time.” The gallery credits the photographs to Steen Evald, Kongehuset. Royal insignia and the King’s miniature portrait
In its description of the portraits, the Royal House identifies the Order of the Elephant and a diadem set with turquoises and diamonds. It also notes a miniature portrait of Isabella’s father, King Frederik X, worn as an order portrait.
Another image shows Isabella holding a frame containing a painted portrait of the King. The Royal House describes the gold frame as alternating 12 white pearls with 12 small diamond crosses associated with the Order of the Dannebrog, and says it belonged to Queen Margrethe, who received it after her 2004 wedding. The miniature painting is attributed to English miniaturist Tom Mulliner and described as watercolor on a thin slice of mammoth ivory. These are the gallery’s identifications and descriptions.
The birthday events announced in advance
On 6 March 2025, the Royal House announced public events planned for 11 and 15 April. Its notice outlined the program in advance; it is not a report confirming what took place. Royal House of Denmark: birthday announcement
- 11 April, Aarhus: The announcement described an event at Aarhus City Hall featuring young local talent from creative fields including music, sport, cuisine and design.
- 15 April, Copenhagen: The notice described a performance at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage, focused on the performing arts and with an invited young audience. It said more than 1,000 people aged 17 to 24 from across the Realm would have an opportunity to obtain tickets through a lottery, and that DR would broadcast the performance.
The March notice also includes a sentence saying the new portraits “are published today,” although the official gallery is dated 21 April. The Royal House’s available pages do not explain the discrepancy, so the gallery’s explicit date is the clearest release date to use.
