The ceremony brought 3,500 guests to the cathedral, drew hundreds of thousands of people along the route, and reached a vast international audience. Its best-known details include the unusual choice of venue and Diana’s ivory gown, whose train is described by sources as either 8 metres or over 7 metres (25 feet).
When and where did Diana and Charles marry?
The wedding took place on 29 July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Royal Family’s biography of Diana records the date and venue, as well as the crowds who lined the route. (The Royal Family)
Why was the wedding held at St Paul’s Cathedral?
St Paul’s was an exceptional choice for a royal wedding. The cathedral says such weddings were usually held at Westminster Abbey; the previous wedding there of a royal heir was Prince Arthur’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon in 1501. Its timeline records 3,500 people attending Diana and Charles’s ceremony, including Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, heads of state and members of other royal families. (St Paul’s Cathedral timeline)
How many people watched the wedding?
Published audience totals differ because they count different kinds of broadcast reception. Guinness World Records estimates 750 million television viewers in 74 countries. The Royal Family gives an estimate of around 1,000 million for television and radio combined. These are separate estimates with different scopes, not competing measurements of the same audience.

In person, the cathedral hosted 3,500 guests, while hundreds of thousands lined the route, according to the Royal Family biography. The *Daily Express* captured the event’s perceived scale on the day, 29 July 1981, with the line “the whole world stopped for the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer,” as quoted by Historic Royal Palaces. That was contemporary newspaper phrasing, not a measured audience statistic. (Historic Royal Palaces)
What did Diana’s wedding dress look like?
Elizabeth and David Emanuel designed Diana’s ivory silk taffeta gown. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia describes it as decorated with lace, hand embroidery, sequins and 10,000 pearls. It gives the train’s length as 8 metres; Historic Royal Palaces describes it as over 7 metres (25 feet). The figures are close but not identical, so each is best kept with its source rather than treated as one exact measurement. (National Film and Sound Archive of Australia; Historic Royal Palaces)

Where can you find more historical material?
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia has a collection entry on footage of the wedding and details about the gown. The entry documents preserved material; it does not establish that a particular version is currently available to stream. For a longer account of the wedding and its preparations, Penguin Random House UK offers a sample chapter from a published book, Charles and Diana.
