Prince Harry was reportedly seen leaving a gym near his home in Montecito, California, on January 16, 2024—the same day Catherine, Princess of Wales, underwent planned abdominal surgery. The palace announced her operation the next day. The timing is documented; reports do not establish what Harry knew or why he went to the gym.
What happened on January 16?
Vanity Fair reported on January 18, 2024, that Harry had been seen leaving a gym near his Montecito home, in Santa Barbara County. He was wearing athletic clothes, a jacket and a beanie. The report placed the sighting on Tuesday, January 16.
That was also the day Catherine underwent planned abdominal surgery. The fact that the events coincided does not show that Harry knew about the operation, was responding to it or intended to attract attention.
When did the palaces announce the health news?
On January 17, Kensington Palace announced Catherine’s operation. A contemporaneous report reproduced the palace’s statement that the surgery had been successful and that she was expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days. That was a forecast in the statement, not a verified account of how long she stayed. The initial announcement did not specify the procedure. Gossip Herald’s January 18 report reproduced the wording attributed to the palace.

Buckingham Palace also announced on January 17 that King Charles would receive treatment for an enlarged prostate, which the palace described as benign. A separate contemporaneous report reproduced the statement’s wording that “thousands of men each year” seek treatment for an enlarged prostate; that phrase is the palace’s statement, not a separately established statistic. What became known later about Catherine’s health?
On March 22, 2024, Catherine disclosed that post-operative tests had found cancer and that she was receiving treatment. She did not identify the type of cancer or give treatment details in that announcement. This later disclosure was not part of the January announcements.
