That was not the same as their formal removal: Buckingham Palace announced a formal process on October 30, and later legal instruments removed his entitlement to the style Royal Highness and the dignity of Prince. Andrew has denied the accusations against him.
Did Prince Andrew give up his titles?
In a statement published by the Royal Family on October 17, 2025, Andrew said he had discussed the matter with the King and his immediate and wider family. He said the continued accusations were a distraction from the work of the King and the Royal Family, and that he would no longer use his title or honours. He also said, “I vigorously deny the accusations against me.” The Royal Family’s statement records his position; it was an announcement of non-use, not a legal instrument extinguishing his titles.
Was Andrew later stripped of the Prince title?
Yes. Buckingham Palace announced on October 30, 2025, that the King had initiated a formal process to remove Andrew’s style, titles and honours. The Palace said he would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, and that formal notice had been served to surrender the lease on Royal Lodge, with a move to alternative private accommodation planned. The Palace page is displayed as dated October 31, while the House of Commons Library identifies the announcement as October 30; the distinction is between the statement’s event date and the page date. Buckingham Palace’s statement also reiterated that Andrew denied the allegations and expressed sympathy for victims and survivors of abuse.
What the formal steps changed
The House of Commons Library’s March 12, 2026 briefing says Letters Patent dated November 3, 2025 declared Andrew no longer entitled to the style Royal Highness or the titular dignity of Prince. A London Gazette notice dated November 5 directed that the Duke of York be removed from the Roll of the Peerage. These are distinct steps: one addressed the royal style and dignity, the other the peerage roll. The briefing explains that simply choosing not to use a title does not, by itself, end the title’s legal existence. House of Commons Library: The removal of titles and honours.

Why did Andrew give up the titles?
Andrew’s October statement said the continued accusations were distracting from the work of the King and the Royal Family. The announcement came amid renewed attention to his association with Jeffrey Epstein and excerpts from Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, as reported by The Guardian. Giuffre alleged abuse involving Andrew; Andrew has denied the accusations. The statements and title changes do not establish the truth of those allegations or constitute a finding of guilt. Giuffre’s family described the decision as vindication for her and survivors and called for the Prince title to be removed; that was their characterization, not a legal finding.
What name and titles should be used now?
After the Letters Patent, Andrew is no longer entitled to the style Royal Highness or the titular dignity of Prince. The Palace’s October statement used the form “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor,” without a hyphen. The Commons Library notes that the surname is normally hyphenated, but the Letters Patent and Palace statement use the unhyphenated form. When describing the formal aftermath, “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor” follows those documents; “Prince Andrew” may still identify him in discussion of the earlier events or in the context of the original news story.
