Primitive War turns a Vietnam-era search mission into a dinosaur survival story. Its military setting and deliberately heightened creature-feature tone make it a different proposition from Jurassic Park; whether that unusual mix works depends on how much rough-edged action you want alongside the premise.
What is Primitive War about?
Set in Vietnam in 1968, the film follows Vulture Squad, a reconnaissance unit sent into an isolated jungle valley to investigate the disappearance of a Green Beret platoon. The mission uncovers dangers beyond the missing soldiers. The setup shifts the familiar dinosaur thriller into a military-survival scenario rather than a theme-park disaster. Disney+ lists the film as a 2025 science-fiction action title directed by Luke Sparke, with a runtime of 2 hours 13 minutes and a TV-MA rating.
The listed cast includes Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, Nick Wechsler, Jeremy Piven, Anthony Ingruber, and Aaron Glenane.
Is Primitive War like Jurassic Park?
Only at the broadest level: both put people in danger from dinosaurs. Primitive War replaces the park and its engineered attraction with soldiers operating in hostile jungle terrain. That gives it a military-action frame, not the same sense of a carefully controlled public spectacle collapsing into catastrophe.

The comparison also clarifies the difference in tone. The Daily Beast’s August 21, 2025 review describes Primitive War as an intentionally odd, exploitation-style Vietnam-era dinosaur movie. That is one critic’s characterization, not a guarantee that every viewer will read the film the same way. It points to a more knowingly heightened creature feature than the polished adventure commonly associated with Jurassic Park.
How do the creatures, action, and Vietnam setting work?
The Daily Beast review finds energetic creature mayhem, but also criticizes the effects, sets, lighting, and the film’s limited use of its Vietnam setting. Those are a critic’s judgments rather than an objective scorecard, but they identify the central trade-off: the premise is more distinctive than the execution may feel to viewers looking for convincing effects or a richly realized historical backdrop.

As a result, the Vietnam setting is best understood as the framework for a jungle combat-and-survival story, not evidence that the film is chiefly a historical account of the war. Its appeal rests on the collision of soldiers, a remote valley, and dinosaur danger.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. Rialto Distribution identifies the film as based on Ethan Pettus’s novel The Primitive War. That confirms the adaptation’s source, but does not establish how closely the movie follows the novel scene by scene.

What do reviews and audience ratings say?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 60% Tomatometer from 25 critic reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter from more than 250 verified ratings when accessed in 2026. These are changing platform snapshots, not fixed measures of quality; the two percentages also reflect different groups and should not be treated as directly equivalent verdicts.
