Who lived in Northeast India, when did they live there, and how did their cultures change? Archaeologist Manjil Hazarika’s 2017 book, Prehistory and Archaeology of Northeast India: Multidisciplinary Investigation in an Archaeological Terra Incognita, brings archaeological evidence and related fields together to address those questions. Its central insight is that Northeast India should be understood not as an isolated margin, but as a region whose past may be connected to wider histories across South, Southeast and East Asia.
Prehistory and Archaeology of Northeast India at a glance
Published by Oxford University Press in 2017, Hazarika’s monograph is a regional synthesis of prehistoric archaeology and the history of archaeological research in Northeast India. It considers sites, artefacts, settlement patterns and the potential contribution of palaeoecological research. The print edition’s ISBN is 9780199474660.
The book’s subject is not a single excavation or a complete account of every period. It examines what the available evidence can support, how earlier investigations have shaped knowledge of the region, and what further archaeological and interdisciplinary work is needed to understand cultural development.
Why the region matters to a wider Asian story
Northeast India sits between the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, with connections extending in broader discussions toward East Asia. Hazarika’s regional framing treats this geography as a reason to investigate movement and cultural interaction across the region, rather than assuming that its past developed apart from neighbouring areas.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In his 2019 review of the book, Dhrijyoti Kalita describes its challenge to easy generalisations about Northeast India’s past. The review presents the region as a possible corridor for movement between the subcontinent and Southeast and East Asia. That is an interpretive framework for asking questions about connections—not archaeological proof of a particular migration route or a settled account of who moved, when, or in what direction.
What the archaeological evidence can—and cannot—show
Artefacts and Neolithic evidence
The book and Kalita’s review discuss stone artefacts, pottery and celts as part of the evidence used to investigate prehistoric life. The review reports Hazarika’s view that the region had a substantial Neolithic presence, while also indicating that the evidence and its interpretation vary. Artefacts help researchers identify material practices and possible cultural patterns, but they do not by themselves establish a complete chronology or explain how communities changed.

Surface finds versus excavated contexts
A significant constraint is the uneven character of the archaeological record. Hazarika’s introductory material notes that many studies have concentrated on surface sites, while excavated Neolithic and historical sites are comparatively rare. Surface finds can reveal that archaeological material is present and help identify promising places to investigate; without secure stratigraphic contexts and dating, they generally provide less reliable evidence for when objects were used or how they relate to one another.
Excavated, stratified and chronometrically dated contexts can establish sequences more securely. The relative scarcity of such evidence limits how confidently researchers can trace transitions between periods or compare developments across the region. The book’s case for sustained archaeological and palaeoecological research follows from that gap: a fuller account depends on stronger, better-contextualised evidence, not simply on adding broad explanations to scattered finds.

What remains unresolved
Kalita’s review points to an uneven record for later cultural sequences and an unresolved gap between Neolithic evidence and later state formation. That gap is a research question, not proof that nothing happened in the intervening periods. Proposed explanations such as river-course changes, erosion, acidic soils or shifts in settlement are possibilities discussed in relation to the missing or difficult-to-read record; the available account does not establish any one of them as the cause.
The book’s lasting contribution is to bring the region’s archaeological evidence into a wider frame while making clear how much depends on the quality and context of that evidence. Questions of who lived in Northeast India, when they lived there, what material cultures they created and how those cultures changed remain open to investigation. Hazarika’s synthesis offers a way to think about those questions without treating a proposed connection or an incomplete sequence as settled fact.
