Pope Leo XIV met with Cate Blanchett, Spike Lee and other figures from the film industry at the Vatican on 15 November 2025. The audience in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace was intended to deepen dialogue between the Church and cinema; Leo used it to urge filmmakers to include marginalized voices and address human suffering without exploiting it.
Why did Pope Leo invite the film industry to the Vatican?
The Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education organized the audience in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and the Vatican Museums. The dicastery said the gathering was meant to deepen dialogue with the world of cinema and explore how artistic creativity could contribute to the Church’s mission and the promotion of human values. The dicastery’s announcement described a planned audience at the Apostolic Palace on 15 November 2025 at 11 a.m.; post-event reports from Catholic News Service and The Associated Press place the meeting in the Clementine Hall that day.
Which stars attended?
Blanchett and Lee were among the attendees named in AP’s account, which also mentions director Greta Gerwig. Catholic News Service reported that Spike Lee, Gus Van Sant, Monica Bellucci, Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen and Sergio Castellitto were in the front row.
Before the event, the Dicastery for Culture and Education said Cate Blanchett, Spike Lee, Judd Apatow, Monica Bellucci, George Miller, Gus Van Sant and others had confirmed they would attend. That was an advance list, not a complete final attendance roll; it should not be treated as a record of everyone who was there.

What did Leo say about cinema?
Leo described film as more than entertainment or comfort: at its best, he said, it can unsettle viewers, raise difficult questions and help them recognize experiences beyond their own. “When cinema is authentic, it does not merely console, but challenges,” he said, according to AP. “It articulates the questions that dwell within us, and sometimes, even provokes tears that we didn’t know we needed to shed.”
He also called cinema “a popular art in the noblest sense, intended for and accessible to all,” AP reported, and urged filmmakers to make room for voices that are often left out. Blanchett, speaking at the event, connected that idea to the work of filmmakers: “Filmmaking is about entertainment, but it’s about including voices that are often marginalized and not shy away from the pain and complexity that we’re all living through right now.”

Address suffering without turning it into spectacle
Leo urged filmmakers to confront violence, poverty, exile, loneliness, addiction and forgotten wars while safeguarding and promoting human dignity. Catholic News Service reported his concise distinction: “Good cinema does not exploit pain,” he said. “It recognizes and explores it.” The distinction is between depicting suffering and reducing it to a device for shock or sentiment; Leo’s appeal was for films that take people’s lives and dignity seriously.

Catholic News Service reported that Leo named four favorite films: It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), directed by Frank Capra; The Sound of Music (1965), directed by Robert Wise; Ordinary People (1980), directed by Robert Redford; and Life Is Beautiful (1997), directed by Roberto Benigni. His selections span family drama, musical, psychological drama and comedy-drama, but they do not establish a formal ranking or a broader statement of Vatican film policy.
