The Poor Things trailer introduces Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe. Its striking imagery—including the title’s corpse-and-baby’s-train framing—hints at the film’s deliberately fantastical world, but the trailer’s story is about Bella’s appetite for learning and experience.

What is Poor Things about?

In the official trailer, Dr. Godwin Baxter brings Bella back to life. Bella then sets out to learn about the world, with the film presenting her development as a fantastical journey shaped by travel, equality, and liberation. The trailer offers a premise rather than a full account of the plot, so its unusual images should not be mistaken for a literal summary of the story.

Searchlight Pictures’ film page also frames the story around Bella’s new life and her desire to explore beyond the world she has known.

Who is in the trailer?

Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, and Willem Dafoe plays Dr. Godwin Baxter. The official trailer also names Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Margaret Qualley.

What book is the film based on?

Poor Things adapts Scottish novelist Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel. The film and book are distinct works: the adaptation relationship does not mean the novel’s narrative presentation is identical to the film’s visual storytelling. Readers interested in the story’s source can look for Alasdair Gray’s novel Poor Things.

How did the filmmakers create the film’s visual world?

Director Yorgos Lanthimos told the Associated Press, “From the moment I read the novel, I always felt that we needed to build a world that Bella would inhabit.” The production approach included large sets, miniatures, elaborate costumes, and modern technology. The AP reported that immersive sets were built on Budapest soundstages, including a London townhouse, a winter Paris square, and a cruise ship. Those reported production details help explain the film’s designed world; they should not be taken as proof of how any individual trailer shot was made.

The Walt Disney Company UK press kit credits James Price and Shona Heath as production designers, Holly Waddington for costume design, Nadia Stacey for hair, make-up and prosthetics, and Robbie Ryan for cinematography. These crafts shape the film’s look beyond any single striking image in the trailer.
