A ponytail can look sleek, relaxed, curly, braided or playful without changing the basic technique: choose a comfortable placement, gather the hair, secure it, then shape the finish. These ideas range from quick everyday styles to more polished looks, with simple steps and ways to avoid unnecessary pulling.
Choose a ponytail by placement and finish
Height changes the overall effect: high ponytails feel sporty or dramatic, mid-height styles are versatile, low ponytails read polished or relaxed, and half-up styles keep hair off the face while leaving the length loose. Texture and details—such as curls, braids, bubbles or an accessory—make each option distinct.
| Style | Placement and finish | What you need | Effort and comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleek high pony | High; smooth and polished | Brush, elastic, bobby pin; optional heat tools and styling product | Simple gathering, but keep the base comfortable rather than tightly pulled |
| Polished low pony | Low at the nape; smooth, with a center or side part | Brush and elastic; optional pins or light product | Low-effort; loosen the crown slightly if that feels better |
| Wispy low pony | Low; soft, with a few loose face-framing strands | Elastic; little or no product | Quick and relaxed |
| Half pony | Upper section gathered; the rest remains down | Elastic or barrette | Quick; gather only the amount that feels comfortable |
| Braided pony | Hair secured first, then braided down the length or to one side | Elastic; optional second tie | More steps than a basic pony; braid gently without pulling at the scalp |
| Curly pony | Any comfortable height; curls remain visible in the tail | Elastic; optional curl cream | Quick if curls are already styled; avoid painful scalp tension |
| Bubble pony | Usually a gathered tail divided into rounded sections | Several elastics | Requires repeated tying and gentle shaping |
| Twin ponytails | Two sections, placed high, mid-height or low | Two elastics; optional accessories | Simple, though parting and matching the placement take care |
| Barrette or cuffed pony | Any placement; accessory becomes the focal point | Elastic and a barrette or cuff | Quick finishing detail |
These are styling options, not rules about which placement or accessory suits every hair type. Vogue’s 2026 guide also includes boho knotless, power, mini and midi variations; its bubble-pony suggestion is to use roughly three to five elastics, depending on hair length. Vogue’s 2026 ponytail guide
How to make a sleek ponytail and hide the elastic
A sleek pony can be high or low. The elastic-covering trick works for either: wrap a small piece of hair from the tail around the base, then pin it underneath. Heat styling is optional; smooth hair with a brush and use a finish product only if you want extra hold.

How to style a polished or wispy low pony
For a neat low pony, choose a center or side part, smooth the hair toward the nape and secure it there. To soften the look, loosen a little hair at the crown or leave a few strands around the face. A wispy version needs little product; a more polished version can use light smoothing product if you prefer.
Aveda’s occasion-ready tutorial prepares damp hair with a leave-in treatment, dries it, creates a center part, tucks the front sections behind the ears, adds modest crown teasing, smooths the front, then gathers and ties the hair. The brand features its own products, but the sequence can be adapted with products you already use—or without them. Aveda’s polished low pony tutorial

More ponytail ideas to try
Half pony
Separate the upper portion of the hair and secure it, leaving the rest down. Adjust how much you gather to suit the look and keep the tie comfortable. A barrette can replace or decorate the elastic.

Braided pony
Secure a ponytail first, then braid the length and tie the end, or braid a section as you gather the hair to one side. Keep the braid relaxed enough that it does not tug at the base. Vogue suggests a satin-wrapped scrunchie for its boho braided example. Vogue’s 2026 ponytail guide
Curly pony
Gather curls at a comfortable height and let the texture show in the tail. Use curl cream sparingly if it is part of your routine; styling product is optional, and a ponytail should not hurt or pull at the scalp.

Bubble pony
Secure the ponytail, then add elastics along its length. Vogue suggests roughly three to five, depending on hair length. Gently ease the hair outward between each pair of elastics to create rounded sections. Avoid pulling the sections so firmly that the base becomes uncomfortable. Vogue’s 2026 ponytail guide
Twin ponytails
Part the hair into two sections and secure each with an elastic. High placement feels playful; lower placement is more understated. Adjust the part and ties until both sides feel even and comfortable, then add accessories if you like.

Tools, heat and comfort
An elastic is the basic requirement; a brush and bobby pins help with smoothing and hiding the tie. Extra elastics are useful for bubble or braided variations. Pomade, hairspray and curl cream are optional and depend on the finish. If using hot tools, heat protectant is a sensible part of the routine, but no hot tool is necessary for a ponytail.
- The American Academy of Dermatology advises letting hair partially air-dry before styling, minimizing repeated brushing and heat, and using flat irons on dry hair at low or medium heat no more often than every other day. AAD: Hair styling without damage
- Wet hair breaks more easily, so most people should handle it as little as possible. The AAD says people with tightly curled or textured hair should brush it wet to reduce breakage. AAD: Hair styling without damage
- Keep the ponytail comfortable, vary hairstyles rather than wearing a tight style continuously, and change it immediately if it hurts or pulls. Repeated tension can cause traction alopecia. AAD: Hairstyles that pull can lead to hair loss
Pain, stinging, scalp crusts or visible tenting are signs to respond to, not to style through. The AAD advises consulting a board-certified dermatologist about hair-loss concerns and notes that prolonged traction alopecia can become permanent. AAD: Hairstyles that pull can lead to hair loss
