Spoilers for the PONIES season finale follow. Set in Moscow in 1977, Peacock’s PONIES turns two embassy secretaries into CIA operatives after their husbands die under mysterious circumstances. Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson make the unlikely partnership its strongest asset: their contrasting characters bring humor and friction to a story that keeps real danger in view. The finale’s last image is potent, but its unanswered revelations land differently now that the series has been cancelled after one season.
What is PONIES about?
PONIES takes place in Moscow in 1977. Bea (Emilia Clarke), an educated Russian speaker and the child of Soviet immigrants, and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson), a brash, fearless American, work as secretaries at the US Embassy. When their CIA-agent husbands die under mysterious circumstances, the women become operatives and investigate what happened to them.

The title is intelligence jargon for “persons of no interest”: a description that makes the women’s assumed invisibility a premise for the show’s spy adventure. David Iserson and Susanna Fogel co-created the series; Iserson is showrunner, and Fogel directed episodes. Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi and Vic Michaelis also feature in the cast.
Do Clarke and Richardson make the partnership work?
Yes. The series is at its most engaging when Bea and Twila have to rely on one another despite their different instincts and histories. Bea’s language skills and cultural background give her a particular connection to Moscow, while Twila’s audacity pushes her into situations Bea might approach more cautiously. Their differences create comic friction, but also make the partnership feel useful rather than interchangeable.

Clarke gives Bea a composed intelligence that can shade into uncertainty as the investigation unsettles her assumptions. Richardson makes Twila’s nerve entertaining without making her seem immune to consequence. The performances let the characters be funny and capable while still registering grief and fear. The show’s best scenes draw energy from that balance, not simply from the novelty of two women becoming spies.
How does the comedy fit the espionage?
PONIES is better understood as a comic spy caper with dramatic stakes than as a meticulous procedural thriller. The Associated Press describes it as comic first while noting that its characters confront genuine peril and grief. Co-creator Susanna Fogel put the intended balance this way in an AP interview with co-creator David Iserson: “Funny people in serious situation is our thing.”
That approach works when comedy comes from character: the mismatched partnership, the women’s uncertain footing in a dangerous world, and the gap between their secretarial roles and their new work. It can also soften the tension. Viewers looking for sustained tradecraft, intricate operational detail or the slow-burn gravity associated with John le Carré-style spy stories may find the show more interested in momentum and personality than procedure. The Guardian similarly framed it as an espionage drama crossed with a female buddy caper and retro movie, praising its chemistry and laughs while noting its lighter attention to tradecraft.
The Moscow setting and 1970s styling give the series a distinct period atmosphere, rather than turning it into a claim of historical realism. Its appeal comes from the collision of that world with Bea and Twila’s lively, often messy partnership. The result can shift quickly from a joke to a threat; whether that tonal mix feels nimble or uneven depends on how much weight a viewer wants the espionage plot to carry.

Major finale spoilers: the season reveals Cheryl as the CIA mole, identifies Bea’s husband Chris as a double agent, and then shows Chris alive. Meanwhile, Bea and Twila are left in danger at the burning US Embassy, with KGB agents pointing guns at them. The revelations reframe the investigation and make the closing danger immediate, but the season leaves those threads unresolved.
As a final shot, the embassy confrontation is arresting: fire, guns and the two leads facing an apparently impossible situation make a strong visual endpoint. As a season finale, it is deliberately incomplete. The story opens new questions about Chris, Cheryl and the women’s fate rather than resolving the central mysteries. That can be an effective cliffhanger when another chapter is available; here, Variety reported on June 24, 2026, that Peacock cancelled the series after one season. The unresolved ending therefore feels less like a promise of escalation than a story stopped at its most consequential turn.

How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?
The first season consists of eight one-hour episodes. Peacock released the full season in the United States on January 15, 2026. Sky Group announced all episodes for Sky and NOW in the UK and Ireland beginning May 22, 2026. Streaming rights vary by territory and can change, so check the current catalog in your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: Is PONIES worth watching?
Watch PONIES for Clarke and Richardson’s complementary performances, its offbeat spy-caper energy and a period setting that gives the partnership room to stand out. Go in expecting comedy and danger to share the screen, not a tradecraft-heavy espionage procedural. The finale delivers a memorable image and bold revelations, but because the one-season series was cancelled with its major questions open, it does not provide satisfying narrative closure.
