In a February 2024 interview with Scroll.in, creator-director Richie Mehta described Poacher as a multilingual story shaped by a real ivory-poaching case, extensive reporting and filming in real jungles. The eight-episode Prime Video series was scheduled to premiere on February 23, 2024; that was its planned release date at the time, not confirmation of current availability.
What is Poacher about?
Scroll described the series as inspired by a 2015 haul of illegally obtained ivory that exposed an elephant-poaching racket. The interview does not establish the precise seizure quantity, the complete law-enforcement record or later court outcomes, so the series’ relationship to the case should not be read as a verified account of every detail.
Scroll reported that the show has eight episodes and stars Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Nimisha Sajayan and Roshan Mathew. It also named Eternal Sunshine Productions, founded by Alia Bhatt, among the producers.
How did Richie Mehta research the story?
Mehta said he spent about two years researching the case and its wider human context. He described meeting people in Kerala’s Forest Department, including personnel based across India, and workers from the Wildlife Trust of India. He also spoke with accused poachers who were still contesting cases in court and with people who had become witnesses for the prosecution, in some cases meeting them more than once.

He said he wanted to understand not only the case but also the lives, motivations and professional risks of people working on the front lines of what he called planetary health. The two-year figure is Mehta’s estimate of his research period, as reported in the 2024 interview.
Why is the series multilingual?
Poacher uses Malayalam, English and Hindi. Mehta said the real case involved Malayalam speakers working alongside people who spoke Hindi, English and Bengali. He rejected the idea that using several languages was inherently a risk, describing the story as one in which people from different cultures come together around a shared purpose.

What was filming in real jungles like?
Mehta said the production spent months filming in live jungle locations and treated the crew as guests in those environments. He described trying not to trample or interfere with the natural setting and said the crew stopped filming and moved back when animals needed to pass.
“Any time an animal needed to pass, we would stop and back off.”
