Josh Widdicombe, Bastille drummer Chris “Woody” Wood and broadcaster Gordon Sparks are among Plymouth Argyle’s best-documented famous supporters. Dawn French and Michael Foot are also commonly associated with the club, but the available evidence for their supporter histories is less direct. This is a curated shortlist, not a verified ranking: the sources do not provide a common measure of either fame or fandom.
Five famous people associated with Plymouth Argyle
Josh Widdicombe
The comedian and television presenter is one of Argyle’s clearest celebrity supporters. In a 2017 FA Cup preview, The Guardian described Widdicombe as a “celebrity Argyle supporter” and reported that he planned to attend Plymouth’s match at Liverpool. That attendance detail applies to that particular fixture; it should not be taken as evidence of a regular match-going routine. The official Argyle Podcast archive also featured him discussing his best and worst memories of the club.
Chris “Woody” Wood
Wood, the drummer for Bastille, is a long-standing member of the Green Army. The official Argyle Podcast says he has supported the club since the early 1990s and is often seen wearing Argyle shirts while touring and performing with the band. The club also identified him as an Argyle fan in a 2025 celebrity-match announcement. The sources establish his connection to Argyle shirts generally, not a particular season’s kit or a current product listing.
Gordon Sparks
Broadcaster and former Argyle commentator Gordon Sparks has a particularly deep connection to the club. In a 16 August 2022 announcement, Plymouth Argyle called him a lifelong Pilgrims fan, recounted his long commentary career and described him as a club ambassador. The club named Home Park’s press box in his honour. Reflecting on the recognition, Sparks said it was “just a combination of two passions – radio and my football club.”

Dawn French
The comedian and actor is often named among celebrity figures associated with Plymouth football. The available source for that association is a secondary compilation, however, rather than French’s own account or an official club record. It does not establish how long she supported Argyle or whether she attended matches.
Michael Foot
The same secondary compilation associates the late Michael Foot, the politician and writer, with Plymouth football. The evidence located does not give details of his supporter history, so his inclusion is best understood as a commonly repeated association rather than a fully documented account of his fandom.

Why this is a shortlist, not a ranking
“Most famous” has no objective measure in the available sources. The evidence is also uneven: official club material and independent reporting directly support the Argyle connections of Widdicombe, Wood and Sparks, while the available mentions of French and Foot are less direct. Fame and depth of support are different things, and the sources do not provide comparable evidence to score either one or order the five definitively.
