In Pluribus episode 6, “HDP,” the hive mind’s explanation for a food shortage becomes a horror reveal: its liquid food contains human-derived protein. The episode calls the shortage a “caloric deficit,” but that is a story-world explanation—not a real nutritional finding.
Why the hive has a food problem
The hive says it cannot deliberately harm or kill living things, including plants. That rule sharply limits what it can eat while it tries to feed a very large population.
In Josh Rosenberg’s December 5, 2025 Esquire recap of episode 6, the food sources described in the story include windfall produce, food that had already been processed and stockpiled, and milk. The episode also raises the question of whether these sources can sustain the population.
What “HDP” means in the episode
An informational video in the episode, presented by John Cena speaking as himself, introduces the shortage with the line: “We’re facing a caloric deficit, and to make up for it, we’ve had to take certain measures.” The video identifies the added ingredient as “HDP,” or human-derived protein.

- 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Equipped with 4 high-precision sensors, the scale can weigh your foods between 3 g - 5000 g in 1 g increment
The recap reports that the episode gives HDP as 8 to 12 percent of each carton. That percentage is a fictional claim in the dialogue, not a verified product label or nutritional analysis.
Why the reveal is a moral contradiction
The hive’s stated principle is that it cannot deliberately harm or kill living things. Yet using human remains as food makes that principle difficult to reconcile with its practices. The episode’s tension is not simply that the hive has found an unpleasant ingredient; it is that its survival strategy appears to violate the moral boundary it claims to observe.

The food supply also turns the hive’s constraint into a practical dilemma. Windfall produce, stored processed food, and milk may serve as sources in the story, but the episode’s concern about sustaining a huge population leaves open how long they can suffice—and what the hive will do when they do not.

The dialogue includes figures about population, calories per carton, daily calorie needs, and daily deaths. These are numbers spoken by characters within the fictional story, not independently established demographic, nutrition, or mortality statistics. “Caloric deficit” should likewise be understood as the hive’s explanation in the episode, not a real-world nutritional assessment.
