Plex Is Ending Free Remote Video Streaming—Who Needs a Pass?

Plex’s remote video rule does not mean every viewer needs a subscription: a server administrator’s Plex Pass covers users of that server. Local playback, remote music, and remote photos remain free.

Plex’s remote-playback rule is about watching video from a personal Plex Media Server while you’re away from its local network. On affected apps, at least one qualifying pass is required: the server administrator’s Plex Pass, the viewer’s Plex Pass, or the viewer’s Remote Watch Pass. The server owner’s Plex Pass covers everyone accessing that server, so viewers do not each need a pass in that case. Plex’s Remote Watch Pass guidance describes the account rules.

What Plex changed—and what still works for free

Plex says the new requirement began on April 29, 2025, for apps updated to its newer experience, starting with mobile and expanding across platforms. It applies to remote playback of personal video from a Plex Media Server—not all Plex use. Plex’s support page sets out the qualifying passes.

  • Remote personal video: Requires a qualifying pass on an affected app.
  • Local playback: Streaming while connected to the server’s local network remains free.
  • Remote music and photos: Remote music in Plexamp and remote photos in Plex Photos are exempt from this video rule.

Plex explained its rationale in a March 19, 2025 company update: “The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature.” Plex, “Important 2025 Plex Updates”.

Who needs to pay: the server owner or the viewer?

The rule is satisfied if the server administrator or the individual viewer has the right pass. Which account pays matters: a server owner’s Plex Pass covers all Plex accounts accessing that server remotely, while a Remote Watch Pass is tied to the account that holds it.

Which Plex apps have the rule?

Plex announced a staged rollout rather than a single switch-on date for every device. Its announcements give start dates, not a definitive current list of which clients have completed rollout:

  • Mobile and updated apps: Plex said the requirement started April 29, 2025, for apps using its new experience, beginning with mobile. Plex support.
  • Roku: In an announcement on November 19, 2025, Plex said it would begin requiring a pass on Roku the following week. The company said other Plex TV apps and third-party API clients would follow during 2026. Plex’s November 2025 announcement.
  • Supported smart TVs and consoles: Plex announced that the requirement would begin March 23, 2026, on supported smart TVs—including Samsung, LG, and Vizio—and on PlayStation and Xbox. The announcement reaffirmed that local streaming and remote music and photo access were unchanged. Plex’s March 2026 announcement.
  • Fire TV: Plex described a gradual rollout beginning in April 2026. Plex’s Fire TV announcement.

In a September 2026 forum discussion about third-party clients, Plex said it was enforcing the already-announced policy and was not changing anything else. The available announcements do not establish a complete, up-to-date client-by-client rollout status. Plex’s forum discussion.

Remote playback also depends on network access

A pass satisfies the subscription rule; it does not ensure that a server can be reached over the internet. Plex says Remote Access must also be enabled successfully for the server to be accessible from another network. If a player cannot connect, check the server’s Remote Access status and network setup; subscribing will not by itself resolve port-forwarding, NAT, firewall, or internet-provider problems. What the change means for mobile app users

Before the newer mobile experience, Plex’s mobile apps could impose a one-minute playback limit unless users unlocked playback with a one-time activation payment or Plex Pass. Plex says that one-minute limitation no longer applies in the new mobile experience, but remote personal video remains subject to the pass rule. Plex’s mobile activation guidance.

Check your setup before choosing a pass

  1. Confirm where you are watching: If your device is on the server’s local network, this remote-video requirement does not apply.
  2. Check whether the media is video: Plex’s stated exemption covers remote music in Plexamp and remote photos in Plex Photos.
  3. Ask the server administrator about Plex Pass: If the administrator has it, Plex says accounts using that server for remote playback are covered.
  4. If the server is not covered, check your own account: Your Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass can satisfy the rule for your account. A Remote Watch Pass generally does not pay for other full accounts sharing the server.
  5. Check network reachability separately: If you have an eligible pass but cannot connect, verify that Remote Access is enabled and working.
