The Pixar Theory is a fan-created timeline that connects Pixar films into one imagined universe; Pixar has not confirmed it as official continuity. If you want the studio’s verifiable order, watch the films by release date. If you want Jon Negroni’s speculative story, begin with Brave—the starting point of his original 2013 outline—and treat the links as playful interpretation, not Pixar lore.
Which Pixar movie order do you mean?
“Pixar movies in order” can mean either the order films were released or a proposed chronology inside the Pixar Theory. They answer different questions: release order is a studio catalog; the theory’s order is an evolving fan interpretation.
| Order | What it means | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | The sequence of Pixar feature films by release year, as listed in the studio’s Feature Films catalog. | Watching the films as audiences first encountered them, or following an order that can be checked against Pixar’s own listing. |
| Pixar Theory order | A speculative in-universe sequence proposed by writer Jon Negroni and subsequently revised and extended. | Enjoying an imaginative connective narrative built from recurring details, motifs, and themes. |
Pixar’s catalog currently lists titles from Toy Story (1995) through newer releases including Elio (2025), Hoppers (2026), and Toy Story 5 (2026). It is a release catalog, not a studio-approved chronology or a fan-theory watch list.
What is the Pixar Theory?
Jon Negroni first laid out the Pixar Theory in 2013 as a way to read the studio’s feature films as one connected universe and overarching story. The idea draws on recurring visual references, repeated character or object motifs, and similarities between films. Negroni’s own advice is to keep the premise in perspective: “The trick is not take any of it too seriously.”

That distinction matters. An Easter egg can be a deliberate reference without proving that two films share a literal timeline. A familiar object, design, or image may reward attentive viewers while remaining a playful nod rather than evidence of shared continuity.
How the proposed timeline begins
Brave as the starting point
In Negroni’s original outline, Brave comes first. The theory interprets the film’s will-o’-the-wisps and witch as an explanation for later stories in which animals show human-like intelligence and objects appear to be alive. It then uses that premise to connect intelligent animals, sentient toys, and increasingly capable machines across other Pixar films.

Boo, the witch, and the doors
One of the theory’s best-known speculative bridges is that Boo from Monsters, Inc. grows up to become the witch in Brave. In this interpretation, Boo uses doors and magic to search for Sulley across time. It is an imaginative reading of the films’ details—not a plot point Pixar has confirmed.
Negroni’s timeline has changed and expanded as new films have appeared. A complete list therefore needs to identify which version it follows. Combining the original 2013 proposal with later updates or another fan’s chronology without saying so can make a personal interpretation look like a single settled sequence. The available sources do not establish one current, authoritative fan order covering every 2026 title.

Is the Pixar Theory official canon?
No. It is a fan theory, not a confirmed Pixar timeline. Negroni has specifically rejected the claim that Pixar’s sharing of an Easter-egg compilation confirmed the shared-universe idea. Pixar’s official film catalog establishes titles and release years; it does not establish the theory’s hidden chronology.
It is reasonable to enjoy the connections as a viewing lens, but phrases such as “the theory proposes” or “Negroni argues” are more accurate than stating that all Pixar films take place in one canon universe. The distinction lets the theory remain fun without turning interpretation into fact.

Which order should you watch?
Choose release order for a straightforward watch-through
Use Pixar’s official feature-film catalog and follow its release years. This is the clearest choice if you want a verifiable sequence and want to see how Pixar’s films reached audiences over time.
Choose the Pixar Theory for a speculative rewatch
Start with Brave if you are following Negroni’s original outline, then use a dated version of his later chronology rather than treating every fan-made list as interchangeable. Watch for motifs and references, but regard them as clues within an interpretation, not proof that Pixar has endorsed a single continuity.
For most first-time viewers, release order is the simpler route. For a rewatch built around connections and questions, the theory can add a playful layer—provided you know which version you are following and where speculation begins.
