That is disappointing news for fans hoping to see her return—but it is not an announcement that the sixth film has been canceled. As of August 2026, the screenplay was still in development, with no official title, plot, release date or settled cast reported.
What Keira Knightley said about returning
At a London screening on September 25, 2025, Knightley was asked whether there had been talks about another Pirates movie. Her answer was: “There haven’t.” She added that she had only just heard the question and said, “there are no conversations.”

Asked about returning, she said: “You know I think my pirating days are over.” She went on to say she was pleased to have been part of the films, but suspected her “swashbuckling days are done”—before joking that she looked swashbuckling that evening. PEOPLE’s interview, reproduced by AOL, records her remarks.
Knightley’s comments describe her own expectations and the contact she had received at that point. They are not a studio casting announcement, and they do not rule out her changing her mind in the future.

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 still happening?
The latest reports describe the sixth film as still being developed, not as a completed or scheduled production. At TheWrap’s TheGrill event on September 30, 2025, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said, “We’re working on a script.” He said the film would not move forward until the collaborators were satisfied with the writing: “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.”
Bruckheimer said two scripts had existed at one point, one was dropped, Ted Elliott worked on the current version, and another writer was brought in to fill gaps. An account of his TheWrap appearance also reported his comment that Margot Robbie was “still involved” in some capacity.

A Backstage overview updated August 13, 2026, continued to describe the screenplay as in development. It reported no official title or plot announcement and said the direction and cast remained unclear. Development does not establish that a film has been greenlit for production or that a release date is set.
What is known about the possible cast
The available comments point to different levels of certainty, not a confirmed cast list:

| Person | What has been reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Keira Knightley | She said in September 2025 that she had not been approached and suspected her swashbuckling days were over. | No conversations with her at that time; no definitive studio decision about her future involvement. |
| Johnny Depp | In August 2026, Bruckheimer said, “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.” | Reported talks, not a signed deal or confirmed return as Jack Sparrow. |
| Margot Robbie | Bruckheimer said in 2025 that she was “still involved” in some capacity. | Involvement with the franchise’s next installment was reported, but this does not confirm that she is cast in the same film or that separate projects have merged. |
The Depp comment was reported by The Guardian on August 17, 2026. It is evidence of talks, not a casting confirmation.
What has—and has not—been announced
- Established: A sixth film’s screenplay remained in development in the latest cited coverage.
- Not established: An official film title, plot, release date, production schedule or settled cast.
- Separate projects: The August 2026 Backstage overview identified Jeff Nathanson as the writer of a reboot and described Robbie’s project as separate. Bruckheimer’s 2025 remark about Robbie does not prove those projects have become one film.
The franchise has five released films. The latest, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, came out in 2017. The series had grossed more than $4.5 billion, according to The Guardian in 2026.

Why the update is disappointing—but not a cancellation
Knightley’s answer closes no door on the film itself: it speaks to her lack of contact and her personal sense that she may be finished with the role. The sixth movie’s status is a separate question. The most recent cited coverage still placed its screenplay in development, while leaving its story and cast unsettled. Fans therefore have neither confirmation of an Elizabeth Swann return nor evidence from these reports that the project has been canceled.
