Pink (2016) Review: A Timely Examination of the Legal Response to Sexual Assault

Pink turns a criminal case into a pointed examination of consent and the scrutiny women face, though its courtroom speeches sometimes overwhelm its character drama.

Pink makes a forceful case that consent—not a woman’s clothing, drinking, company, or past choices—is the question that should matter after sexual assault. Its courtroom drama gives that argument urgency, even as its speeches sometimes make the characters feel like vehicles for a thesis.

What Pink is about

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s 2016 Hindi drama opens after a violent encounter. Minal has injured Rajvir while resisting him; Rajvir and his associates then use their influence and the legal process against her and her flatmates, Falak and Andrea. Lawyer Deepak Sehgal becomes involved in their defense, and the film shifts between the night’s consequences and a courtroom contest over what happened—and how the women should be judged.

The setup is gripping partly because the case is never only about reconstructing events. The women’s behavior, character, and respectability become subjects of scrutiny, threatening to eclipse the question of consent. That shift is the film’s central concern: social judgment can follow a woman into the legal process and shape how her account is received.

How the film argues for consent

Pink is clearest when it exposes the assumptions used to make a woman’s choices sound like permission. Going out, drinking, or making other decisions does not, by itself, establish consent. The film’s title and courtroom framing keep bringing the viewer back to that distinction, while the case shows how readily attention can drift toward judging the women instead.

In a 2016 interview with The Indian Express, Roy Chowdhury said, “The message that no means no should have been sent out much earlier in India”. The remark captures the film’s sense of urgency and its historical moment. It does not demonstrate that the film changed public opinion or legal outcomes; its achievement is in making the argument explicit and difficult to sidestep.

Performances and courtroom drama

Taapsee Pannu gives Minal a guarded intensity that makes the cost of being scrutinized feel personal. Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang, as Falak and Andrea, help establish that the case bears on more than one life. Amitabh Bachchan’s Deepak Sehgal brings authority to the defense, while Angad Bedi plays Rajvir, the man at the center of the confrontation.

The courtroom is the film’s engine: testimony and argument turn a private encounter into a public judgment of the women. At its best, that structure forces the audience to notice how respectability is treated as evidence. At times, however, the dialogue is so direct that dramatic discovery gives way to statement-making. The National’s 2016 review praised the film as a “big cinematic victory” but also argued that Bachchan’s star power sometimes seemed to dominate the direction. That is a useful tension to consider: Deepak’s authority helps the film carry its case, yet the story can feel most dependent on him precisely when it wants the women’s experience to command attention.

Verdict: forceful, if sometimes too speech-driven

Pink is a compelling courtroom drama because it makes its audience confront the gap between asking what happened and judging the women involved. Its directness can flatten some scenes into a platform for the message, and its reliance on a commanding senior star is not always balanced by the ensemble. Still, the film’s urgency and its focus on consent give the legal contest real stakes. It is most persuasive not as a guide to law, but as a challenge to the assumptions that can shape how a woman’s account is heard.
