In July 2024, Port Hedland’s Pier Hotel announced it would close after owner Lynne Taylor said she was retiring and wanted to spend more time with family in New Zealand. The announcement prompted residents to remember a place shaped by music, friendships and a rough-edged reputation. The reports from June and July 2024 do not give a precise final service date, and they do not establish the hotel’s present status.
Why did the Pier Hotel announce its closure?
Owner Lynne Taylor’s retirement was the reason given for the planned closure. PerthNow reported on 2 July 2024 that Taylor wanted more time with her family in New Zealand. A week earlier, NewsWire reported that the property had attracted buyer interest and was under contract. That sale update does not specify when the pub would serve its last drinks.
The property was reported as a 5,733-square-metre landholding, with the figure attributed to Knight Frank; it describes the land, not the size of the hotel building. NewsWire’s 27 June 2024 sale report, republished by Yahoo Finance, gives the sale context.
What did the pub mean to Port Hedland residents?
In the PerthNow report, locals recalled the Pier as a gathering place where people heard live music and DJs, formed relationships and returned for social occasions. They also remembered fights and the venue’s unruly side. The memories were not simply about a bar: they tied the pub to different chapters of life in Port Hedland.

“I’m devastated,” local Leah Sanders told PerthNow. Bram Angus recalled the pub’s intensity this way: “It’s the only pub I’ve been to and seen so many people leave in an ambulance.” That is Angus’s personal recollection, not a comparative safety measure.
Knight Frank agent Corey Dell’Olio called it “kind of a blokes’ pub” and said it fit the mould of Port Hedland in some ways. That was his characterization, not a neutral definition of the venue or its patrons.

How did the Pier Hotel’s history develop?
PerthNow traced the hotel’s story to Port Hedland’s early years and described its changing role as the town shifted from a coastal community toward a mining and industrial hub. The dates below reflect the history as reported by PerthNow on 2 July 2024.
| Period | Reported milestone |
|---|---|
| 1890s | The Pier Hotel was first constructed and was one of the first two hotels established in Port Hedland. |
| 1900 | George Pilkington took over from the original proprietors, Wallace and Robertson. |
| 1906 | The hotel gained an additional storey. |
| 1950s–1960s | As workers arrived for the iron-ore industry, the pub served as a home-away-from-home for some of them. |
| Late 1960s–early 1970s | The report associates the pub with cockroach races, spaghetti-eating contests and a rough atmosphere. |
| 2011 | PerthNow said the Pier appeared on a police-released list of Western Australia’s ten most violent pubs and clubs. The underlying police document was not located in the reporting reviewed. |
These milestones help explain why the hotel’s story became entangled with the town’s own: its role changed alongside Port Hedland’s workforce and economy, while its stories accumulated over generations.

Where did the “World’s Toughest Pub” reputation come from?
PerthNow reported that a 1970s feature by journalist John Dyson in the Sunday Telegraph helped popularize the “toughest pub” label. The article described Dyson’s piece as a 2,000-word feature. The phrase is a reputation, not an official award or the result of a verified ranking.
One anecdote associated with Dyson’s reporting came from an unnamed man at London’s Australia House. The man warned: “I’ll give you one bit of free advice: If someone pours beer into your pocket, for God’s sake don’t hit the bastard.” The speaker was not identified as Dyson.

The 86-stabbings story is unverified
PerthNow described a story that 86 people were stabbed in one night as rumor and said its origin was unknown. It should not be treated as a verified incident count or evidence of a measured safety record. No named study or independently verified safety statistic about the Pier Hotel was identified in the reporting.

The 2 July 2024 PerthNow report announced the planned closure but gave no precise final service date. The 27 June 2024 NewsWire report said the property was under contract; that is a dated account of the sale process, not confirmation of what happened afterward. The available reports therefore establish the 2024 announcement and local response, but not the hotel’s present operating status.
