“Scenes from WhatsApp University foundation laying ceremony at Gala Ghot Diya University. Enjoy.” That was Ms Medusa’s caption on May 2, 2024, accompanying a satirical sketch about a viral video of Galgotias University students. The joke turns the Indian meme “WhatsApp University” into a real campus—and plays on the name Galgotias.
What was the video behind the joke?
The sketch responded to an Aaj Tak interview with students from Galgotias University in Greater Noida who were marching in Delhi toward Congress headquarters. Scroll reported that the students were protesting against Congress over subjects including inheritance tax and “urban naxals”; Outlook connected the march to remarks by Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda. Scroll’s May 2 report and Outlook’s May 2 coverage describe the clip and its context.
In the footage as described by those reports, reporter Ashutosh Mishra asked students why they were protesting. One student said he wanted a “developed India” but did not elaborate; another said he lacked clear information about the Congress manifesto. Outlook also reported that a student read “urban naxal” as “urban maxwell.” These are details from a short, edited clip—not evidence about the views or knowledge of all Galgotias students.
Why did Ms Medusa call it a WhatsApp University ceremony?
“WhatsApp University” is a mocking expression used in India for misinformation and false claims circulated through WhatsApp forwards; it is not the name of a real institution. The satire takes that familiar meme literally: if there is a “university,” it imagines, there could be a physical campus and a foundation-laying ceremony.

The caption’s “Gala Ghot Diya University” is a pun on Galgotias University’s name. Scroll identified the post as a sketch by Ms Medusa, published on May 2, 2024. Its target is the perceived gap between confident political messaging and students’ answers in the clip—not a factual announcement about a campus.
What were the students protesting about?
Contemporaneous reports say the march’s placards and stated themes included inheritance tax, wealth distribution, and “urban naxalism.” Free Press Journal described the march toward Congress headquarters and recorded online reactions comparing the students’ answers to “WhatsApp University.” Its May 1 report provides that account.

The viral exchange does not establish who organized the protest or whether anyone was pressured to attend. Those claims should not be inferred from the interview alone. The footage and reports offer a limited glimpse of some students at one march, rather than a comprehensive account of the university or the political organizers.

In the reported exchange, “urban maxwell” was a student’s apparent misreading of “urban naxal,” a political label heard in the interview. It is not a separate political concept in this story; the phrase became part of the clip’s online reaction because of the apparent mix-up.
