Photos capture Sakura-Con’s 2022 return
GeekWire’s April 19, 2022 photo essay by writer and photographer Julie Emory documented thousands of anime and manga fans gathering at the convention. Its images and reporting show the event’s busy public spaces, from costumed attendees to the exhibit hall and panel rooms. View GeekWire’s photo essay.
The convention was celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle reported in its May 12, 2022 event report that Sakura-Con had sold out with 25,000 participants; that is the Consulate’s reported figure, not an independently audited count. Costumes and cosplay programming
Cosplay was a prominent part of the gathering, and the April 7 schedule included sessions such as Cosplay Photography 101, Cosplay Photography for Cosplayers and Cosplay Tools 101. The schedule establishes that photography and cosplay were subjects of programming; it does not say what equipment attendees used. See the April 7 schedule.

Artists and vendors
Artist Alley and the exhibit hall offered different parts of the convention experience: the former focused on artists, while the latter brought together merchandise vendors. GeekWire noted the range of vendor offerings, from anime character statues to fashion brands. The Consulate’s report also listed Artists Alley and exhibitor vendors among the event’s attractions.
Panels, performances and event logistics
Beyond shopping and cosplay, the 2022 program included contests, film screenings, live performances, panels and guest speakers. The event schedule also listed Anime Figure Collecting: The Basics and Beyond, illustrating the variety of fan-focused sessions.

For event information, Sakura-Con announced on April 8, 2022 that its Guidebook app would be the primary source, replacing the paper Pocket Programming Guide. Read the organizer’s Guidebook announcement.
GeekWire reported that attendees in 2022 had to wear masks and show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test at badge pickup. Those were requirements for that event, not current guidance for Sakura-Con.
