Its photographs and captions highlight selected moments—not a verified image for every year—and the latest schedule says the 2026 tree is expected November 7, with its lighting planned for December 2.
Selected photographs show how the tree changed
Rockefeller Center’s 2015 retrospective, “The Tree Through the Years,” and its current tree page offer a visual history through selected milestones. Their captions record changes in decoration, lighting and meaning, but do not establish a complete year-by-year photographic archive or provide photographer credits for every image.
| Year | What Rockefeller Center’s history documents |
|---|---|
| 1931 | Construction workers pooled money to buy a 20-foot balsam fir, decorated it with handmade family garlands and raised it on Christmas Eve. The retrospective says workers gathered beneath it to collect paychecks during the Great Depression; the garlands included tinfoil ends from blasting caps used in excavation. |
| 1933 | Rockefeller Center identifies this as the start of the annual tradition, two years after the first construction-site tree. Its institutional history describes the first official lighting ceremony’s tree as 50 feet tall, with 700 lights. |
| 1942 through the end of World War II | The tradition continued, but blackout regulations meant the tree was unlit. The retrospective attributes this comment to Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia: “I know of no other period when lighted Christmas trees would be more appropriate.” Rockefeller Center does not give a speech date or fuller archival citation. |
| 1949 | The “White Tree” was 76 feet tall and coated with hundreds of gallons of silvery-white flameproof paint to suggest snow; it carried multicolored globes. |
| 1966 | The retrospective identifies a tree from Ottawa, Canada, donated in honor of the Canadian Centennial, as the first from outside the United States. |
| 1971 | The tree was mulched and recycled after the holidays for the first time, according to the retrospective. Rockefeller Center says trees are now lumbered and donated to Habitat for Humanity. |
| 1986 | The donated tree had been planted by the donor’s father around the time construction began in 1931. |
| 1998 | A tree from Richfield, Ohio, was flown to New York aboard an Antonov An-124. |
| 1999 | The retrospective calls the 100-foot tree the tallest on record. |
| 2025 | The season’s tree was a 75-foot Norway spruce from East Greenbush, New York, donated by the Russ family. Rockefeller Center estimated its age at about 75 years. Its seasonal page listed a 45-foot diameter, an approximate weight of 11 tons, more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights and about five miles of wire. |
The figures belong to the years and seasons identified above. In particular, the 2025 tree’s dimensions and lighting are not specifications for the upcoming 2026 tree.
From a workers’ tree to an annual tradition
The 1931 tree began with construction workers pooling their money for a tree at the work site. Rockefeller Center’s account describes handmade garlands and a Christmas Eve raising; the retrospective adds the detail of workers collecting their paychecks beneath it during the Depression. The distinction in dates matters: 1931 marks the first tree, while 1933 marks the beginning of the annual tradition.

Wartime darkness, a painted tree and changing lights
The selected milestones capture more than changes in size. During wartime blackouts, the tree remained part of the tradition but was not illuminated. In 1949, paint and multicolored globes transformed it into what the retrospective called “The White Tree.” Much later, the 2025 season’s official figures describe multicolored LED lighting. Together, these episodes show how the tree’s appearance and public meaning shifted with the times.
What to expect for the 2026 season
As of October 8, 2026, Rockefeller Center’s current tree page says the tree is expected to arrive November 7 and be lit December 2. Visiting hours and further details are to be announced later. Those dates are the current published schedule; the page does not yet establish the 2026 tree’s height, origin, donor or lighting specifications.

Where to see the photos—and what the pages do not establish
Look to Rockefeller Center’s “The Tree Through the Years” retrospective and current Christmas tree page for its selected historical images and captions. The pages do not establish a complete inventory of photographs for every year since 1931, consistent image-by-image photographer or collection credits, exact capture dates for every image, or permission to download and reuse the images. A historical photograph appearing on an official page is not, by itself, a rights grant.

The tree’s story continues after the holidays
Rockefeller Center says the tree is lumbered after the season and donated to Habitat for Humanity. It also identifies The Carpenter’s Gift, written by David Rubel and illustrated by Jim LaMarche in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, as a children’s book inspired by the tree. It is related reading, not a photographic history.

- Crystal-Look Acrylic: These are precision-cut clear acrylic ornaments, not real crystal or glass — we say it up front. The multi-faceted cut catches your tree lights and throws the same icy sparkle as glass (customers tell us they look like real crystal once the lights are on), but each piece is very light in weight, so it won't drag your branch tips down, and it won't shatter into shards if a child, cat or vacuum knocks it off the tree.
- 18 Pieces in 7 Styles: 2 × large starburst snowflake drops 7.5" long / 2 × large starburst snowflake drops 7.2" long / 1 × classic snowflake drops 5.35" / 2 × double-snowflake drops 7" / 1 × double-snowflake drops 5" / 5 × twisted icicles 5.31" / 5 × octagon bead strands 4.8". The mix of lengths is what makes a tree look styled instead of spotty — hang the long ones near branch tips and the short ones deeper in.
- Shatter-Resistant & Reusable Season After Season: Unlike glass ornaments, these won't break into sharp shards if they fall — safer around toddlers, cats and dogs, and easy to pack away. Made for indoor display: keep them on the tree, mantel or a covered porch rather than in open weather, since prolonged sun and rain can dull clear acrylic over time.
- White Hanging Ribbons Included: Every set comes with ready-cut 3.94" white hanging ribbons— please note the loops ship untied so nothing tangles in transit, so you'll thread each one through its ring before hanging (most people do all 18 while watching a movie). No extra hooks to buy. Once on, hang them anywhere: tree branches, wreaths, mantel garland, stair rails, doorframes and windows.
- For Trees, Wreaths, Mantels & Winter Weddings — Broken-Piece Replacement: Beyond the tree, customers use them on fireplace-mantel garland, wreaths, stair rails, arched doorways and window displays, and for winter weddings, Frozen-theme birthdays and winter-wonderland parties. Each piece is individually padded, but if anything arrives cracked, message us and we'll send replacements — no return needed.
