No cause of death was announced.
Who was Peter Sinfield?
Sinfield was a British lyricist, producer and creative organizer whose career bridged progressive rock and mainstream pop. He was part of King Crimson from its beginnings, helping name the band and contributing to its music, live presentation and visual identity. After leaving the group, he worked with Roxy Music, Greg Lake, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and a broad range of pop performers.
Sinfield was born on 27 December 1943 and died on 14 November 2024. Those dates make him 80. One reported social post gave his age as 81, but that conflicts with the dates and with The Guardian’s death report, which described him as 80.
What did Sinfield do in King Crimson?
His contribution went well beyond writing words. King Crimson described him as its “original roadie, lyricist, lights operator and live sound engineer.” He also helped establish the band’s name and presentation, co-produced some of its early work, and recruited his friend Barry Godber to create the cover art for its debut album.

Sinfield wrote the lyrics for the group’s first four albums: In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), In the Wake of Poseidon (1970), Lizard (1970) and Islands (1971). The writing helped give the records their distinctive imaginative and political atmosphere. Recalling his place among the musicians, he said: “I became their pet hippy, because I could tell them where to go to buy the funny clothes that they saw everyone wearing.”
How did his career change after King Crimson?
Robert Fripp asked Sinfield to leave King Crimson in 1972. Sinfield then produced Roxy Music’s debut album and the single “Virginia Plain.” He released his own album, Still, in 1973, and went on to write lyrics for Greg Lake and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Lake’s “I Believe in Father Christmas” reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart.

After spending time in Ibiza, Sinfield returned to the UK in the late 1970s and formed a songwriting partnership with Andy Hill. Their work included Bucks Fizz’s “The Land of Make Believe,” a UK No. 1, and Céline Dion’s “Think Twice.” The latter topped the UK chart and achieved chart success internationally; Sinfield and Hill received an Ivor Novello award for the song. Sinfield also collaborated with artists including Five Star, Leo Sayer, Agnetha Fältskog and Cher.
Two distinct chapters of songwriting
| Career chapter | Work and collaborators | Documented reach |
|---|---|---|
| King Crimson and progressive rock | Lyrics for the band’s first four albums; work with Greg Lake and Emerson, Lake & Palmer | Lake’s “I Believe in Father Christmas” reached No. 2 in the UK. |
| Pop songwriting | Partnership with Andy Hill, including songs for Bucks Fizz and Céline Dion | “The Land of Make Believe” reached No. 1 in the UK; “Think Twice” topped the UK chart, achieved international chart success and earned an Ivor Novello award. |
The contrast is not a simple measure of one phase’s importance over the other. Sinfield moved between the expansive, often fantastical or political imagery associated with King Crimson and the concise storytelling of songs written for pop performers. The chart results document the reach of particular songs, rather than measuring the wider influence of either body of work.

His later years
Sinfield published Under the Sky, a collection of lyrics and poems, in 1974. After heart surgery in 2005, he concentrated more on poetry and eventually retired to Aldeburgh, Suffolk. He once said he would like “I Talk to the Wind,” a song from King Crimson’s debut, on his gravestone. Explaining the choice, he recalled “the young men we used to be in ’69, struggling to wake up and wondering what to do with the day, as if nothing mattered and everything mattered at the same time.”
