In Disney’s 2023 live-action Peter Pan & Wendy, Captain Hook was once James, Peter Pan’s childhood friend and fellow runaway to Never Land. James left without explaining why; when he returned as a pirate, Peter rejected him. That rupture becomes the personal history behind their feud—a story created for the film, not one established in J. M. Barrie’s novel.
Who was Hook before he became a pirate?
The film reveals that Hook was once known as James. He and Peter were close friends who ran away to Never Land together. James eventually left without saying goodbye or explaining his departure. He later returned as Captain Hook, but Peter would not hear him out. Disney’s production press kit describes this history as a new narrative for the adaptation, and D23 likewise frames the feud as beginning with their childhood journey to Never Land.
Disney Latino’s Spanish-language account adds that James left to search for his mother and that pirates took him in and raised him to become captain of the Jolly Roger. It attributes the explanation of Peter’s rejection to producer Jim Whitaker: Peter judged James for having become an adult and joining pirates rather than listening to his explanation. Those additional details come from that official account.
How does their friendship become a feud?
The film’s account makes the feud personal: James leaves, returns changed, and is refused a chance to explain himself. Read this way, the conflict turns on separation, growing up, and rejection, rather than simply presenting Hook as Peter’s enemy from the outset. That is an interpretation of the events the film describes, not a quoted statement of the filmmakers’ themes.

Executive producer Adam Borba said the filmmakers added surprises to character backstories to make the dynamic between Hook and Peter—and Peter’s decisions—make more sense. Jude Law, who plays Hook, said the history was “very much at the heart of what made this Hook interesting and desirable to play.” It gives the character a personal history to perform, not only a role as Peter’s antagonist.
Is this backstory in J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy?
No. The childhood friendship between Peter and James, James’s search for his mother, and his pirate upbringing belong to Disney’s 2023 film version. Disney describes Peter Pan & Wendy as a live-action reimagining of Barrie’s novel and the 1953 animated film, and its press kit identifies Hook’s history as a new narrative and a departure from the source material. The novel is useful for comparing the adaptation with Barrie’s story, but it does not contain this film-created origin for Hook.
Rank #2
| Story detail | Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) | Barrie’s Peter and Wendy |
|---|---|---|
| Peter and James as childhood friends | They are close friends who run away to Never Land together. | This film-created friendship is not established as Hook’s backstory. |
| Why James leaves and returns | Disney Latino’s account says he leaves to search for his mother, is raised by pirates, and later returns as Hook. | This film-created sequence is not established as Hook’s origin. |
| Origin of the rivalry | The film connects it to James’s departure, return, and Peter’s refusal to hear him out. | Disney’s press kit describes the film’s Hook history as new and a departure from the source material. |
Why did the filmmakers give Hook this history?
The new origin supplies an emotional explanation for why the two characters are at odds and gives Hook more dimension than a one-sided villain. Borba said the added backstories were intended to make the Hook–Peter dynamic and Peter’s choices more understandable. Law’s comment points to the performance value: the history helped make this version of Hook more interesting to play.
