For a free family day out in Perth, start with Kings Park and Botanic Garden: entry is free, and its playgrounds, picnic facilities, gardens and walking routes make it possible to build several different outings in one precinct. For an indoor plan or a date-specific activity, check current City of Perth Library and local council holiday listings before you go.
When are the Perth school holidays?
The spring 2026 school break is listed as 26 September to 11 October 2026. Those dates are specific to that break; check the WA Department of Education term dates for future holidays, and confirm event details with the organiser.
10 free school holiday activities in Perth
Several ideas below are different ways to spend time in Kings Park, not ten separate destinations. That makes the list useful for choosing a day around children’s ages, interests and the weather, while keeping the free-entry options clear.
1. Spend a day at Kings Park and Botanic Garden
Kings Park is free to enter and open 24 hours daily according to the park authority’s visitor map. Families can take in the gardens, open spaces and city views, then choose a playground or walk. Check current access and facilities before setting out, as individual attractions may have their own hours or closures.

10. Look for a free activity on a local council calendar
Council holiday programs can add indoor and outdoor options close to home. South Perth’s October 2026 listing, for example, included a free safety puppet show, stories and songs, a LEGO day and fitness sessions. These are dated examples, not a recurring schedule; check each event’s date, cost, age guidance and booking status on the City of South Perth school holiday page or your local council’s calendar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an outing by age, weather and plans
- For under-sixes: Ivey Watson Playground is the clearest age-specific choice in this list.
- For a wet-weather plan: Look at library programs and confirm the date, age range and booking requirements before leaving home.
- For nature play: Naturescape is a distinctive option, but check its seasonal hours and closure notices first.
- For a flexible outdoor day: Kings Park’s gardens, picnic areas and walking options let you keep the plan simple or combine several activities.
- For a scheduled activity: Council and library calendars change by holiday period; a free listing for one date does not establish that the program runs year-round.
Free entry does not mean every part of a day costs nothing: transport, food and optional purchases may add expenses, and some nearby events can charge admission. Venue access and transport details are not consistent across these listings, so check the relevant venue’s current information for your family’s needs.
Quick Recap
Check before you leave
- Confirm the school-holiday dates using the Department of Education calendar.
- Check the venue or organiser’s current opening hours, closures, event dates and booking requirements.
- For Naturescape, check seasonal hours and weather or fire-related restrictions, and plan for adult supervision.
- Allow for transport and food costs even when admission or the activity itself is free.
